I know better than to judge a book by its cover or a person by their looks, but when it comes to beauty products a pretty outward appearance sometimes gets the best of me and I’m fooled into making a purchase precisely because the packaging is just so damn gorgeous. Don’t get me wrong. Pretty packaging should count for something — especially if it gives you a little lift every time you spy it — but just like books and people, if good looks are all it has you should move on. On the other hand, if it happens to be “take-your-breath-away beautiful” and delivers on its indulgent promise as well, then by all means have at it!
Here, 5 outer beauties that are just as perfect on the inside:
Diptyque Rosa Mundi Candle ($68) is just one example of the partnership between the diptyque brand and Antoinette Poisson, a creator and restorer of domino paper. Yes, the candle looks exquisite, but it also releases the most beautiful scent — a mix of the damask rose, May rose, currant, bergamot, lychee and geranium. This limited edition collection also includes fragrance, a mini candle, a scented oval, perfumed paper, domino paper fit for framing and more.
Slip Silk Sleepmask in Gold ($45) is the reason I no longer have dark circles under my eyes. It blocks out light in the most luxurious way so you can get your zzzzzs and actually wake up feeling and looking refreshed. Made from 100% Mulberry Silk and 100% pure silk filler, it is silky-soft to the touch and couldn’t be more comfortable. Slip it on at bedtime. There’s no tugging your delicate eye skin, it doesn’t draw moisture from the skin the way cotton masks can or block skin the way synthetic masks can, plus it’s hypoallergenic, dust mite-resistant and leaves skin feeling hydrated upon waking. It’s so much better than other sleep masks that it’s recommended by dermatologists, plastic surgeons…and anyone who has ever tried it. Besides Gold, it’s also available in Black, White, Pink, Charcoal and Caramel.
Tatcha Akari Gold Massager ($195) is made of 24-karat gold leaf around a thermal core and was inspired by Japanese acupressure. Cool the wand before using to lift, tighten, de-puff and wake up your skin or warm it up beforehand to detox, de-stress or for a lymphatic drainage massage.
Christian Louboutin Loubichrome Nail Colour ($30) — packaged in a faceted bottle with a sexy-as-hell spiked hologram-looking top — delivers a multi-dimensional liquid metal finish to your nails. The lacquer is highly pigmented and heavily infused with light-reflecting pigments. Choose magenta, lime green or candy red.
Fresh Zodiac Sign Soap ($15 each) comes wrapped in gorgeous artisanal paper I’d be happy to cover my walls in. It’s also finished with a center stone wrapped in wire. I plan on stocking up on this magical soap now because this limited edition collection won’t be around forever and it’s perfect for gifting. The formula is super moisturizing shea butter with specific scents that celebrate the zodiac signs. Aquarius, Libra, and Gemini have a fresh citrus verbena scent and come with an aventurine stone. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are fragranced with a blend of caramel and sugar and feature a quartz stone. Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer are infused with the scent of a waterlily flower and have a fluorite stone, while the soap for Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius’s smells like luscious mangosteen and displays a tiger’s eye stone. All leave your skin silky soft and lightly scented.
NOTE: The Diptyque candle, Slip Silk Sleep Mask and Fresh Zodiac Soap were sent for review. All other products were tested in store. Opinions are my own.
