Like many girls my age, I stopped using lip gloss around the tenth grade. Once a standard in my makeup bag, I grew out of the candy-colored pinky pearly shades and tossed them. I was initially skeptical of the Clinique Black Honey Lip Duo ($21) after opening the package. I typically don’t wear a lot of color on my lips and the Black Honey color – for those of you who, like me, are new to what Clinique calls its cult classic shade – appears quite dark, more of a deep merlot than golden honey.

Clinique launched THE NEW BLACK Collection in August, inspired by the iconic Black Honey shade, originally released in 1971 as a lip gloss and then in 1989 as an “Almost Lipstick.” What started as a cult favorite became a classic and now THE NEW BLACK Collection is bringing the signature Black Honey shade to the whole face with eye shadows, powder blush, and a cream eyeliner.

Cult classics are known as such for a reason, and I think I’ll be adding the  Black Honey Lip Duo to my collection. Although the lipstick appears dark, it applies as more of a sheer shade (I guess that’s why it was an “Almost” lipstick in 1989?) adding tone to my lips without overwhelming them. The gloss itself, too, is smooth without being sticky, which I think is a big plus; few things are worse than that sticky gloss feel, another reason I stopped using them in the first place.

Black Honey is a limited edition shade, sure to be a hot trend this season. If you’re like me, you’ll be interested to try the rest of THE NEW BLACK Collection.

Bonus: the Clinique Black Honey Lip Duo is SPF 15, still important as we move into the fall and winter months!
