VERY WEARABLE RADIANT ORCHID

01-17-14 | Posted by

Expect 2014 to be a year of confidence, joy, and love, if the trend analysts at Pantone are right. The global color authority has chosen Radiant Orchid as the 2014 color of the year.

“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society,” states Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

The company describes Radiant Orchid as a harmony of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones, a wonderfully versatile shade for beauty products. It’s dual cool and warm qualities flatter many hair, eye and skin tones. Much more translatable to beauty than Emerald Green, 2013’s color, Radiant Orchid has been embraced by the beautymakers with a plethora of options and pairs exceedingly well with its sister shades of lavender, purple, and pink.

Purple is a versatile shade for eyes that creates bright eyed to sultry looks. Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Provence ($25) is a smooth as silk powder shadow. Create a gem-like interpretation of the smoky eye with Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Orchid ($26), a long-wear creamy shadow. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Eye Shadow Single in Golden Orchid ($18.50), a sparkling buildable shade, flatters most skin tones.

From barely there to vivid orchid, lip colors embraces the trend as well. Swipe Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm In Voluptuous Violet across your lips for a subtle swash of color. Laura Mercia Crème Smooth Lip Color in Royal Orchid ($26) is a rich semi-lustrous lipstick that looks great with skin types with a yellow undertone. Shiseido Smoothing Lip Pencil In Sakura ($20) may make you think of plum blossoms, but its really a confident pink orchid that smoothly outlines lips.

Radiant Orchid for nails is a no-brainer with an abundance of options to choose from. Essie Nail Polish in Play Date ($8.50), a flirtatious soft purple, is practically a perfect match to Wild Orchid as is Orly nail lacquer in Frolic ($8.50). Butter London in Molly Coddled ($7.50) is an opaque lavender orchid with a cream finish.

Even cheeks can get in the action with Marc Jacobs Shameless Bold Blush in Outspoken Mauve ($30).

Purple can be a bit sedate when translated to beauty, but Radiant Orchid brings a flash of brightness. Try it out on lips, eyes, nails and cheeks, but just not all at once. Here’s to a confident 2014.
