You don’t need to poll all your girlfriends to know that too many of us wish our hair was different then what we were born with. We change its color. We make it straighter or curlier. We want it to have more body or less body. We think we have too much hair or not enough. But, there’s one thing we can all agree on — Each and every one of us wants our hair to shine!

The irony of the situation is that the majority of the things we do to attain gorgeous, healthy looking hair is just what compromises its protective outer layer, keeping it from laying flat and curtailing its ability to reflect light. Yes, things like washing and brushing and heat styling it with blowdryers and flat irons and curling irons prevent it from being its healthiest, but all is not lost if your hair isn’t in the best health of its life. With a little know-how, you can still shine with the best of them.

Here, 4 fab ways to get glossy:

GET RID OF PRODUCT BUILDUP: Just like regular shampoos, a clarifying shampoo will cleanse your hair of the oil, pollution and residue that can easily build up on your strands, but it will also cut through the even more dulling product buildup that can be left behind from dry shampoo, styling products and even your usual conditioner. Since clarifiers deeply cleanse, they can strip hair if over-used, so limit yourself to a once-a-month cleanse with a clarifying shampoo if your hair is on the dry side, but if you’re a product junkie, you’ll want to substitute it with your usual shampoo once a week to twice month.

Klorane Shampoo with Citrus Pulp ($20) easily removes product buildup and gives your tresses antioxidant protection. It’s formulated with citrus pulp to protect and clarify, glutamic acid to reduce excess oil and add strength, and vitamin B5 for a boost in shine and radiance.

TREAT TRESSES TO A DEEP CONDITIONER: Use a deep conditioning treatment once a month or more, depending on how dried out or damaged your hair is. They are able to penetrate the hair shaft to help restore the health of your hair, add moisture to your hair and scalp, strengthen, help prevent split ends and help your cuticle lay flat for natural shine.

dpHUE Hydrate Hair Masque Therapy ($26) contains green tea, shea butter, and vitamins A and E to instantly revitalize dry, dull, course hair. Apply to just washed, cleansed hair and leave on for three minutes for light conditioning to fifteen minutes for deeper hydration before rinsing clean.

USE A SHINE ENHANCER: You can smooth, polish, add instant shine and eradicate frizz and flyways with a shine serum or hair oil.

Phyto Phytolisse Ultra-Glossing Finishing Serum ($30) is non-greasy, lightweight gives your hair a sleek, touchable, smooth, and healthy-looking finish. Apply to towel dried hair and also use throughout the day. It’s formulated with mallow extract for added hydration, pro-vitamin B5 to strengthen and phytantriol for shine.

COAT YOUR LOCKS WITH A GLOSS: If you want your hair to shimmer like glass a professional or at-home hair gloss is the answer to your prayers. It’s a semi-permanent shine treatment that fills the hair and seals the cuticle thereby creating a smooth surface and incredible shine that can last up to a month.

Rita Hazan Ultimate Shine Gloss ($26) is available in Clear, Breaking Brass, Blonde, Brown and Red for incredible shine and enhanced color. Apply this foam from roots to tips and leave on for up to 3 minutes before rinsing and conditioning. It’s ammonia and peroxide free and safe for all hair types.
