For the last twelve years, global color authority Pantone has declared a color of the year, chosen to reflect the times and forecast trends. The 2012 Pantone Color of the Year is Tangerine Tango, and it’s bringing a proverbial pop to the beauty world. Pantone’s pick was selected to convey optimism and energy, and cosmetics companies are all over it for its surprising versatility. Sephora loves it so much that they collaborated with Pantone for a special line in celebration of the color. Tangerine Tango can skew young and trendy or sophisticated, and the orange/red hybrid flatters every complexion. Where to start? This orangey-red might look daunting to women who typically play it safe with color, but there are options suitable for color novices and daredevils alike. Whether you ease into it or dive feet first into the deep end, there’s something pretty in Tangerine Tango for every woman.

Toe the line. A vivid pedicure is always a safe way to test the waters with a new color, and Butter London Jaffa Nail Laquer is a beautiful take on this color trend ($14). The Sephora Color of the Year Nail Enamel Set has Tangerine Tango in a finish for every mood: creamy, matte, glitter, pearlized ($24 for four). The color will look particularly gorgeous with neutral footwear in gray, navy, black or nude.

Put on a citrusy smooch. Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Atomic Orange is creamy and semi-matte, calling attention to a gorgeous mouth with something important to say ($23). MAC Lady Danger is a matte orange red from a line known for its long lasting color ($14.50). For a more subtle wash of Tangerine Tango, look for a sheer gloss. Slick on Nars Lip Gloss in Wonder ($24) or Lancôme Color Fever Gloss in Raging Envy ($26).

Get cheeky. Light up your complexion with of-the-moment cheek color. Tarte Cosmetics Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Tipsy ($25) is a natural formula that delivers beautiful results. Benefit Chachatint Lip & Cheek Stain is an on-trend color spin on the line’s signature product, Benetint. Done correctly, this look should skew towards sun-kissed and away from mid-80s Cyndi Lauper (you can still love her like we do without rocking the look).

All eyes on Tangerine Tango. It’s equally easy to go low key or high impact with all of the eye options available in this hue. A bold shadow can be used to subtle effect on the lid, or up to the brow line for a bolder look. Try Napoleon Perdis Color Disc in Tequila Sunrise ($25). Ready for a bigger color risk? Try on Tangerine Tango liner or lashes for size. Check out the Color Of The Year liner set ($22) and the Tangerine Tango Faux Lash Set ($28), both at Sephora.

If the thought of intense color on your face is still too daunting, consider putting a little touch of  Tangerine Tango near your face; Anthropologie’s orange crinkled flower hair clip ($18) and Jennifer Behr’s Fluoro headband in flame ($128) are both safe and beautiful bets. Whether you go bold or subdued, there’s a gorgeous way for everyone to wear Pantone’s color of the year, Tangerine Tango.
