HELP FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: EASY WAYS TO GET THE RED OUT

Posted by 08.12.14

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 50% of the US population experiences some form of sensitive or sensitized skin leading to chronic redness and inflammation. The right products can help you combat redness while you calm, soothe and treat sensitive skin. Here are 3 possible causes of this annoying irritation.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN CAUSE - 1

Skincare Products - Using the wrong products or using products excessively can take a toll on your skin. Avoid those with added fragrance, dyes, sulfates or other harsh or drying ingredients and stick with skin soothing products specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Powerhouse anti-agers like retinoids, alpha and beta hydroxy acids are best left alone if you're experiencing any skin sensitivity.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN CAUSE - 2

Overzealous Skincare - Too much of a good thing is no longer a good thing. Over-cleansing and over-exfoliating can leave your skin dry, tight and irritated. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser once daily before bed and simply splash lukewarm water on your skin in the morning before patting dry. When skin has calmed down you can reintroduce a gentle exfoliant like an AHA but don't use it more than once a week and steer clear of anything that feels scratchy or grainy.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN CAUSE - 3

Environmental Factors - There are many environmental factors that are out of your control like extreme temperature changes and pollution but there are others that you can work with. Your skin will fare better if you shield it from the sun, stay away from spicy foods, minimize your alcohol consumption, alleviate stress and avoid chlorine and other harsh chemicals. By doing so you'll help keep your skin barrier strong and better able to protect itself.
