Washington DC-based laser dermatologist Tina Alster, MD, is a true Renaissance woman. Â A pioneer in laser dermatology, Alster broke through the glass ceiling early on to claim her place in a field largely dominated by male engineers and scientists. Â She founded The Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in 1990, as the first private practice in the world exclusively dedicated to the development and delivery of advanced laser skin treatments, and has also launched W for Men, an offshoot that focuses solely on male skin care. Most recently she opened a new facility in Chevy Chase, Maryland where dermatologists Rebecca Kazin and Elizabeth Tanzi treat patients.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, yet the most preventable. So why are 3.5 million cases still diagnosed annually? Perhaps young people believe they are immune from the ravages of the sun, or people living in cold climates feel they are under exposed. Whatever the reason, itâ€™s time to reform and adopt safe sun exposure habits to prevent skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or the potentially deadly melanoma.

2009 may just mark an end to the highly touted ‘Lipstick Index.” For those unfamiliar with this old marketing adage, it goes something like this; “when times are tough, the tough buy lipstick,” indicating that women tend to spend money on perks that will make them feel beautiful or happy even when they are in dire straits. However, lipstick sales dropped 5.8 percent during 2008, according to Kline & Co, while liquid foundation sales grew 2.5 percent.
