According to a Beauty in the Bag poll conducted earlier this year, 70% of us aren’t washing our makeup brushes as often as we should—and here’s how often we actually do it…
Once a week: 30%
Every 3 months: 27%
Every 3-6 months: 20%
This is disturbing, considering we’ve all be told that washing our makeup brushes regularly is as important as washing our faces each night going to bed. The purported reasoning behind this cosmetic edict is that dirty makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria, but this isn’t actually the case, according to board-certified dermatologist Lisa Donofrio, MD of New Haven, Connecticut.

You can have the best makeup in the world, but the proper application tools are essential for a flawless finish. Sure, you can get away with your fingers with some things (such as cream blush or highlighter), but professional-grade results require precise, even application that only a brush can provide. Celebrity makeup artist Natasha Severino (who’s worked with the likes of Amber Valletta and Rita Ora) weighs in…

We’ve all heard the dangers of using dirty makeup brushes - from eye infections to spreading acne – but how many of us actually wash our brushes regularly? I certainly am guilty of using a brush that has just a little bit too much grit, a little bit too much color. Well here’s a product review perfect for the lazy beauty girls in all of us – Klix Make Up Brushes with replaceable brush heads. The brushes are sold in a set of three, priced at $59.95, which includes a Foundation/Concealer Brush, a Blush Brush and a Powder Brush. Replacement brush heads for each of the above are sold separately in sets of two – two Foundation/Concealer Brush heads sell for $9.95, two Blush Brush heads sell for $10.95 and two Powder Brush heads retail for $11.95. The collection also features two Kabuki Brushes for $19.95.
Believe or not, a recent survey found that 45% of the women polled never clean their makeup brushes because it is too time consuming or they simply don’t think about it. In fact, Linda Shrier, the creative force behind the Klix collection, developed the line because her own daughter experienced skin problems due to dirty makeup brushes.
Makeup brushes can harbor bacteria, oils and makeup residue that can wreak havoc on your skin – a situation Klix wants to remedy. “This idea is brilliant,” stated Joel Schlessinger, M.D. “If all my patients were to use recyclable makeup brushes, skin infections would be significantly reduced.”
So, if you are like me and always feel guilty about using a brush that isn’t the cleanest, consider the Klix solution. All brushes and replacement heads can be purchased online at www.KlixBrushes.com.
