LIPSTICK DIARIES

Posted by 10.27.14

What kind of lipstick wearer are you? An avid lip biter? Do you only go for the matte? Lip liners — friend or foe? Gloss or no gloss? Do you use balm before color? These and other burning questions can make the difference between flawless or failed lipstick applications.

Four experts offered BITB their best tricks for how to keep your lipstick looking great all day long.

  • Elizabeth Arden Global Makeup Artist Rebecca Restrepo -- “I always recommend women use a lip liner, like Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Precision Glide Lip Liner ($21).  It helps define the lip and give a perfectly defined pout.  It works as an anchor and ensures everything is symmetrical.  The color doesn’t need to match your lipstick exactly, but should match your actual lip color.”

  • Amanda Gabbard, beauty expert and makeup specialist at the Guerlain Spa in the Towers of the Waldorf Astoria New York -- “We often have a thin layer of dry skin over our lips that prevents color from staying put. To avoid this, when brushing your teeth gently run the toothbrush over your lips. Do this after you have rinsed and brush lips while they are still moist to help slough off dry or uneven areas of the skin. It is a better alternative to picking the dry areas which will cause more problems. When applying lipstick, use a light lip balm then apply a lip concealer such as the Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift. This will act as a base to hold the liner and lipstick on -- like using primer before the foundation. After using a lip balm, apply a light-colored lip liner (I suggest Guerlain Bois de Santal #44) around the lips. Avoid using dark lip liners since they tend to make lips appear thinner. Now that the lips are primed and ready to go, apply lipstick and dab a light layer of gloss over. My favorite optical illusion trick is to outline the lips with Guerlain's Precious Lights Highlighting Pen (or use Lingerie De Peau Concealer Compact). Gently dab a Q-tip and enhance your pretty pout with a lighter hue around the lip's outer edge.”

  • Ellie Malmin, Makeup Director, Anushka Spa, Salon, Cosmedical Centre, West Palm Beach, FL  -- "My clients are loving the Glo Minerals Perfect Color Duo for a beautiful soft pink, ideal nude or a gorgeous bold red lip, depending on your coloring and style. This product does double duty by pairing a gloss with a creamy lipstick. First, I recommend dabbing some powder or foundation on your lips so color adheres well. Then I like to line lips with a neutral liner shade that complements the natural lip color. Next, apply the creamy lipstick formula and follow with some gloss for added dimension and shine."

  • Mary Kay Global Makeup Artist Luis Casco -- “Personally, I like a classic semi-matte lipstick texture and a blue based red. I think it’s so chic and timeless.  However, lately it’s been so in to wear an orange-red that I really love how it brightens complexions.”
