Mark your calendars! March 20th is the official start of the Spring season. One of the UK’s top celebrity makeup artists, Jackie Tyson tells us makeup fanatics how to achieve this season’s looks:
Jackie says: “This season it’s all about COLOUR and thank heavens because we’re all so sick of boring neutrals by the time Spring starts!”
MAKING COLOUR WORK FOR YOU
It’s important not to follow fashion blindly, it needs to work for you so Jackie suggests: “It’s a good idea to experiment with colour and find what shades work with your skin tones. Follow a simple rule of thumb: never wear a shade on your face that you wouldn’t wear as a top. The best way to start experimenting with colour is to learn to walk before you run.
I recommend trying to use a lick of a bright coloured kohl pencil under the lower lid and keeping the rest of your eye makeup simple with lashes and liner on the top lid in black. I LOVE MAC’s EYE KOHL in Prunella (purple) or Minted (green).
There are no hard and fast rules about what colours you can and can’t wear, but there are some great makeup kits out there that really help, geared specifically towards green, blue or brown eyes to take the headache out of choosing colours. Try POP Beauty’s Green Eye Class or Blue Eye Class palettes full of all the most flattering of colours.”
EYE FOCUS VS LIP FOCUS
When using stronger colours than usual, it’s important to choose either a focus on your eyes or lips. Jackie explains how: “Most people can get away with colour, but it’s important to focus the gaze on either the eyes or lips. Not many people can pull off both bold eyes and statement lips.
Choose which part of your face is most expressive and enhance it! Nude lips are very now and look great with strong eyes. Choose something with lasting power in a universally wearable nude – you don’t want to look like you’ve covered the lips with your foundation! I like Avon’s Ultra Colour Rich Mega Impact Lipstick in Never So Nude. Strong lip colours are best complimented with a well-defined but classic eye look.
Another hot look for Spring is minimal eye makeup with strong lips, but if you’re not brave enough to lose the mascara, go for a jet black and apply with a precision wand for the most natural of applications. I always carry a Particular Polly mini precision mascara wand in my makeup kit from TheProMakeupShop.com. Leave off the liner too.”
A parting word of advice from our expert on the biggest trend of the season: “It is important to complement your outfit with makeup rather than coordinate. Colour blocking is big for this season, so when you wear bright colours don’t try to match the exact same colour on your eyelids; go for another statement bold colour and use it sparingly.
Bella Pierre has an amazing array of colour Shimmer Powders and you can buy them in stacks of nine so you’re unlikely to get stuck without the perfect shade.”
A SPRING SKIN SPRUCE
A truly immediate way to bring your winter look into the new season is to use a light dusting of bronzer to warm the complexion. Another great UK makeup artist export is Jemma Kidd, sister of the supermodel Jodie. Jemma Kidd has recently launched JK, her fantastic makeup range in Target in the US and there is one product I just can’t live without, the JK show-stopper water resistant bronzer, $28.
I’d say there’s no need to be afraid of colour, fellow beauty-aficionados — just make sure you know how to use it.

Enjoy, don’t get square eyes!
