Though no one would ever classify my skin or hair as oily, I do notice that clay-based beauty products always find a place in my bathroom, especially in the dog days of summer. It’s important to note though, that all clay used beauty products are not created equal. Though most of these products do absorb excess oil, many are also mixed with ingredients that will keep your skin from feeling dry, and depending on the type of clay used they have many other beautifying benefits besides eliminating excess oil. For example Bentonite Clay detoxes, Kaolin Clay gently exfoliates and brightens, French Green Clay tightens pores, Fuller’s Earth’s Clay minimizes hyperpigmentation, and mineral-rich Rhassoul Clay cleans out trapped debris from pores and can even boost volume and shine when used in hair products.
Here, the BITB-approved skincare, makeup, and hair care products you’ve got to try:
Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser ($45) blends both French Green Clay to rid skin of excess oil and other impurities while it visually shrinks pore size and Morrocan Rhassoul Clay for its deep cleansing properties. Its list of ingredients also includes Neroli essential oil to balance and soothe and Vitamin C ester to brighten. To use simply apply, massage in circular motions and rinse clean. For a deeper cleanse, you can leave it on for up to minute before rinsing clean.
Dior Hydra Life Pores Away Pink Clay Mask ($69) gives normal, oily and combo skin just what it needs to combat the look of enlarged pores and purify your complexion. Natural Pink Clay will mattify and Jojoba Extract will keep your complexion soft and hydrated. This naturally pink mask can be used up to 3 times per week. Simply apply it to a freshly cleansed face and leave it on for three minutes before rinsing for a decrease in imperfections and a matte, velvety finish.
Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumizing Paste with Pure Rassoul Clay and Rose Extracts ($53) adds body, volume, and thickness as it cleanses your scalp and hair. To use, work it through your hair in sections and massage it in before adding some water, massaging some more and rinsing thoroughly. It’s made up of Rassoul Clay to restore the proper oil balance to your scalp and boosts volume, Limnanthes Seed Oil Extract to preserve color and shine, Baobab Leaf Extract to help aid in repair and Rose Extract to nourish and protect.
IGK 1995 2-in-1 Shampoo & Texturizer ($25) gives life to fine hair, nourishes thick hair and gives everyone the manageability of “second-day” hair on day one. This shampoo/styler combo cleanses and adds subtle grip. Formulated with Bentonite Clay to cleanse and add texture, Grape Seed Extract to protect strands, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein to build strength and hydrate and Diatomaceous Earth to absorb excess oil and boost texture. Just work through hair and leave on for up to two minutes before rinsing clean.
Tarte Clay Stick Foundation ($39) is ideal for all skin types because it’s formulated to hydrate or mattify depending on your skin’s needs. Amazonian Clay gives this powder-to-liquid formula staying power — up to 12 hours! — but it also blends in mineral pigments, Vitamin C and Vitamin E to soothe, soften, protect and brighten. Use it for medium to full buildable color, as a spot concealer or in multiple light and dark colors to highlight and contour. Available in twelve shades.
