Fabulous and good-for-you beauty products need not break the bank, according to the winning results of SELF magazine’s 2011 Healthy Beauty Awards, featured now in the publication’s May issue. The winners were all selected by SELF readers – more than 2,200 women tested a year’s worth of new beauty products, 1,187 in total, ultimately choosing the best hair, face, makeup, body and sun items.

“Consumers are refusing to pay for things that don’t fulfill a promise of efficacy,” said Elaine D’Farley, SELF beauty director.  Products that multi-task, energize, are easy to use and deliver results also rate high. ”Furthermore, women are more ingredient savvy than ever before,” added Ms. D’Farley.

Overall the winning products reflect a trend of efficacy combined with budget consciousness. For example, one-third of the winning hair products are priced at $10 and under, including Dove Nourishing Oil Care Daily Treatment Conditioner ($5), which was named Best Conditioning Treatment for Dry Hair,  and Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Intense Cleanse ($5), which was recognized as Best Antidandruff Shampoo.

Budget priced makeup winners include Maybelline New York Fit Me! Powder ($8), which took home the Best Pressed Powder honor, and Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm ($7), which won for Best Lip Tint. Orly Primtime Chip Preventing Primer ($10) received the honor for Best Base Coat, while Wet n Wild Megalash Clinical Serum ($7) won in the Best Lash Treatment category.

Even the generally high-priced facial skincare category has a few lower priced items, including Clean & Clear Finished Matttifying Cleanser ($7), recognized as Best Mattifying Cleanser, and L’Oréal Paris Go 360 Clean Anti-Breakout ($7), which stole the prize for Best Acne Cleanser.

Lower priced products were particularly well represent in the Body category with seven of the 10 winners priced at $10 or less. For example, Jergens Overnight Repair Nightly Restoring Moisturizer ($7) was named Best Body Lotion for Night; Curel Sensitive Skin Remedy Lotion ($8) was awarded the Best Body Lotion for Sensitive Skin honor; and Caress Fine Fragrance Elixir Body Wash in Sheer Twilight ($4) was named Best Bodywash.

This year, SELF‘s Healthy Beauty Awards recognized a total of 86 products as winners, ranging in price from $3 to $125. All in all, this is fabulous news for beauty fans interested in purchasing products at all price ranges. And to further share the bounty, for the first time ever, Self is offering discount codes for select Healthy Beauty Award winners. “One of the biggest changes in my ten years at Self is the use of technology,” said Lucy Danziger, SELF editor in chief, of the products and the discount program.
