Hyaluronic acid is one of those beauty stalwarts that has received a lot of press in the last decade as the key ingredient in many injectable fillers. Think Restylane®, Juvederm®, Perlane®, and Belotero®. But that’s not the only claim to fame for HA (as it’s familiarly called). Naturally occurring in humans and other living creatures, HA is a viscous, gooey substance that cushions joints, plays a key role in connective tissue and even sustains the shape of our eyeballs. Its biological properties and natural affinity with our bodies is what makes HA such a great filler. It’s also a readily used ingredient in topical beauty products including moisturizers and makeup. HA has the ability to pull moisture from the air and is said to hold up to 1,000 times in weight in water, which makes it a fabulous barrier for your skin, preventing moisture from escaping and helping your skin to retain its natural plumpness and tone.

Personally, I find a daily dose of HA, keeps my skin looking fresher and youthful. So, if you are not yet familiar with this miraculous ingredient, here are a few of our favorite products that feature hyaluronic acid.

Korres Quercetin & Oak Antiaging Antiwrinkle & Firming Face Serum ($62) – Following a 56 day clinical trial, 100% of users reported that this face serum firmed and smoothed their skin, created a radiant glow, and decreased visible signs of wrinkles. This concentrated serum is said to also improve elasticity and firmness while rejuvenating dull, aging skin using quercetin and oak as a natural alternative to retinol. Derived from the oak tree, antioxidant quercetin quickly works with the skin to minimize the signs of aging. Other ingredients include mourera fluviatilis extract, which has moisture-binding properties to help skin maintain its water level, hyaluronic acid to form a protective barrier and therefore help the skin retain moisture, and hexapeptide, which helps to improve firmness.
