Want to emphasize your eyes? Professional makeup artists swear by lining the upper and lower rims of your eyes with metallic eye liner. It does a stellar job of catching the light and bringing a mega dose of sparkle to your eyes. Shades of silver and gold add even more radiance when also used in the inner corners of your eyes.

Lining the rims of your eyes is also called tight-lining, and you’ll need to take extra care to do it right and avoid irritating or possibly even harming your eye.

  1. To begin, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  2. Choose a waterproof, metallic pencil eyeliner. Lighter colors will make your eyes look bigger and brighter but medium to darker metallic shades will also catch the light. Before applying your pencil, make sure it is freshly sharpened to remove any bacteria so it’s not transferred to your eye.
  3. Finish by lining your upper and lower waterlines, working the pencil between your lashes, too.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Cuff ($20) a metallic silver shimmer with silver micro sparkles. It goes on creamy and dries to a budge-free finish in about 30 seconds. The formula is made up of 50% moisturizing ingredients in a tech-advanced waterproof formula. Available in tons of colors with different finishes.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Metallic Luster Liner in Liquid Gold ($18) has been compared to liquid metal. You’ll notice the velvety smooth, creamy finish and the easy blendability, that won’t create, flake, fade or smear. Also available in Liquid Silver.

Black Up Waterproof Smoky Khol Pencil in Metallic Chestnut ($19) also doubles as an eye shadow. It’s a long-wear waterproof kohl pencil that goes on easily, blends effortlessly and stays put, come rain or shine. Available in 7 more metallic shades including baby blue, emerald and lavender.

Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Khao San Road ($26) is part of a collection named for the most iconic streets in the world. Bangkok, Thailand’s Khao San Road has an anything-goes vibe and this statement-making metallic aquamarine certainly captures that sentiment in a color. The liner has a retractable applicator with a built-in sharpener so you’re always at the ready for a precise, clean application. It glides on smoothly, won’t smear or cake, and gives you 12 hours of wear with a budge-proof finish. You might also want to try Bourbon Street (an award winning purple) and Madison Avenue (a smart slate grey shade).

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Tetra ($22), a shimmering eggplant purple, is highly pigmented and waterproof. It has a twist-up applicator, goes on easily and besides using it to line your eyes, you can also apply it to your lids and smudge it (before it sets) for a long-wear smoky eye. All sixteen shades in this collection — from white to golden olive to bronze and the other colors — deliver a long-lasting, high metallic, inky intensity that you’ll find irresistible.

NOTE: The Urban Decay, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Black Up, NARS and Stila pencils were all tested in store. Opinions are my own.
