Valentine’s Day calls for special occasion makeup. You need it to send the right message–sweet affection or lusty love–and have it last for hours on end without smudging, smearing or fading. Nobody wants to spend half the night reapplying their lipstick.
To give your makeup some staying power, half the job is in the prep, and the other half is choosing the right products and applying them properly. If there was ever a holiday that screams out for a bold red or pink lip look, this is it. It’s easy to pull it off in style by keeping the rest of your makeup minimal and neutral in tone.
Bold colors bring focus to every imperfection so you need to start with smooth, supple lips. Use an exfoliating lip scrub or do-it-yourself with a sugar and honey mix before applying a moisturizing lip balm.
Then, outline your lips with a pencil close to the shade of lipstick you’ll be using. Follow this up by coloring in the lines with the same pencil to give your lipstick something to adhere to and prevent ring around the lips if your lipstick does happen to fade.
Choose a semi-matte or matte formula lipstick to go on creamy but stay put for hours. A tapered-tip lip brush will help you apply short, even strokes for a precise finish. Apply one coat to your mouth, blot with a tissue and then reapply a second coat of lipstick with the brush.
GlamGlow PoutMud Fizzy Lip Exfoliating Treatment ($24) should be applied liberally onto lips and massaged for up to 10 seconds to slough dry, dead skin cells. Then add in a little water to activate fizzing rejuvenating action before rinsing clean with warm water. Made from Caribbean Cane Sugar, Hawaiian Sea Salt, Moroccan Mineral Clay and Hibiscus Flower to smooth, Mint Leaf to refresh, and a tropical bend including Sweet Almond Oil, Lychee and Mangosteen to nourish, this lip exfoliant is the ideal pre-color lip softener, soother and smoother.
Givenchy Le Rouge Perfecto Beautifying Lip Balm ($36) will plump and hydrate for younger-looking lips. Formulated with Shea Butter to moisturize and nourish, Pepperslim and Coolact to plum and refresh, and Eosin to boost your own natural. Wear it sans lipstick or the perfect primer for your favorite lipstick. Worth noting is that it’s encased in a beautiful pale pink genuine leather sheath.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Creme Lipstick ($30) has a high color payoff thanks to triple-milled color-boosting pigments that combine with nourishing and protective peptides, antioxidants and humectants. Expect a subtly delicious vanilla taste and color that lasts up to 10 hours. Available in 25 shades. Choose an innocent pink, a sexy-as-hell red or something in between.
