Long after I was considered a grown-up I would still buy coloring books and a big box of Crayola crayons and while away the hours coloring to my hearts content. I still do it–there’s just something about coloring in the lines that I find very relaxing, soothing and mindless and even somewhat meditative and the results are always beautiful.

It’s no surprise then, that I’m a big fan of makeup crayons. Whether for the eyes, lips, cheeks, face or any combo of the above, makeup sticks are easy and fun to use, plus you’ll get great results whether you’re going for a more dramatic look or a simple wash of color. The best part about these sticks is like coloring in a book, the results are always beautiful.

Jouer Crème Eyeshadow Crayon ($24) comes in 5 gorgeous shimmering colors–vanilla, bronze, plum, deep navy and soft black. The fast-drying, waterproof formula resists creasing and fading and it comes with a built-in sharpener.

Nars Velvet Matte Lips Pencil ($26) combines a lipstick and pencil in one jumbo crayon for a non-drying creamy, matte finish formula that saturates your lips with rich, pigmented color. Choose from twenty gorgeous vitamin E-enriched shades for a smooth, even, stay-put-for-hours lip look you’ll love.

New York Color City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color ($3) proves that sometimes you get a lot more than what you pay for. This twist-up color stick has a rich color pay-off with a medium-gloss finish that you can also blot down for a   lip stain look that lasts for hours.

Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm ($21) is an oil-free, gel formula, build-able, sheer blush that imparts a healthy, just-back-from-a run glow.  Simply apply to apples of cheeks and blend upwards, over cheekbones toward hairline. Add more if desired. *You’ll also like Clinique’s Eye and Lip Chubby Sticks.

Katherine Cosmetics Everyday Cheek Glow ($26) hydrates and protects as it gives a pop of color to eyes, lips and cheeks. The formula includes Olive Oil for added moisture and vitamin E for extra protection. Though it’s name suggests use on the cheek area, you’ll also want to apply a dot under your eyebrows for a little lift and on your forehead, nose and chin for all over radiant glow. Choose Flapsdown for a peachy-pink flush or Bonneymede, a rose-berry shade.

Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Stick Trio  ($45) easily helps you achieve added depth and dimension to your face and gives you a completely natural and professional-looking result each and every time. The dark shadow stick will easily contour and add dimension to the sides of your nose and the hollow under your cheekbones. Add a bit of the bronze stick directly on your cheekbones and use the highlight stick for the bridge of your nose, on your forehead, underneath your eyes, the top of your chin and even on your collarbone area. The enclosed how-to insert gives you the step-by-step for your heart, oval, rectangle, round or square-shaped face so you’re sure to get it right. *Can be used dry for build-able contour or wet for a sheer, more subtle finish.
