Along with crow’s feet, brown spots and pimples, at the top of every woman’s major skin complaints are open pores the size of a J R Ewing’s oil wells. Pores get larger and more visible as skin ages and loses the resiliency that keeps pores tight and small. Genetics, sun exposure and hormones don’t help. Until recently, peels and microdermabrasions were the ‘go to’ pore purging treatments, but now fractional lasers are stepping up as an effective remedy.

A new study from Solta Medical explored the effects the Clear + Brilliant fractional laser has on pores, skin texture and overall skin appearance. This marks the first study to date to measure the effects of a fractional laser on facial pores. According to Dermatologist Jeffrey S. Dover, M.D., co-founder of SkinCare Physicians, in Chestnut Hill, MA, the study leader, “Our research found that subjects who received a series of six Clear + Brilliant treatments had significantly reduced pore size. The results demonstrate that Clear + Brilliant can improve not only the tone and texture of the skin, but also can significantly reduce both pore count and pore size in all skin types.” 95% of the patients treated reported visible improvement in pore appearance, with 60% reporting at least moderate-marked improvement. In addition, 100% of patients reported improvement in skin texture and overall appearance, with 90% reporting at least moderate-marked improvement.

To keep pores in great shape, regular exfoliation is a must. Clean pores translates to smaller looking pores without the debris that stretches them wider. The SilkPeel Dermalinfusion System with the Skin Clarifying Pro Infusion Solution works brilliantly to remove damaged surface skin cells and purge pores with a salicylic acid based formula. The SilkPeel clarifying treatment vacuums away debris and oily residues that build up, plus it delivers bacteria-fighting actives deep down to the base of the pore. Think of it as a Roto-Rooter for your T-zone.

Another good option to use at home is the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System. Pick up the Clarisonic Deep Pore Cleansing Brush Head  ($25 for one or $40 for a set of 2 ) that is designed for oily skin, oversized pores, and helps you get to the areas that are hard to keep clean, like around the nostrils, the crease of the chin, and blemish prone bits of the forehead.

Gone are the days when the answer to cleaning out your pores was in skin stripping alcohol based toners – remember the tall bottle of Caribbean blue Sea Breeze that sat in your medicine cabinet?  The newest treatments get the job done well, but are far more gentle and calming to the skin.

ZO Skin Health Offects TE-Pads ($45) – Drenched in 2% Salicylic Acid, these soft as butter pads slough away pore-clogging dead skin cells and unclog congestion so skin feels squeaky clean without drying out.

ZO Medical Retamax ($145) – Retinoids help skin cells regenerate more and control overactive oil glands that also cause pores to expand and look bigger. This unique retinol formula uses micro emulsion technology blended with antioxidants and proteins to restore the health of your skin. Regular use of this potent yet non-irritating retinol formula, available exclusively through dermatologists and plastic surgeons, will keep pores tight and firm.

Beyond Clear Healthy Skin Accelerator ($29.95 per month for the Beyond Clear System) -  Antioxidant infused serum with Retinol and Niacinamide that strengthens skin, reduces pore size, and evens skin tone for a more refined complexion.

Origins Clear Improvementâ„¢ Active Charcoal Mask To Clear Pores ($22) – This mask has activated charcoal and white China clay to get rid of clogs from deep inside your pores.
