The late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin loved to make up faces. His book Making Faces, published in 1997 chronicles the cosmetics magic he could bestow upon real people, who through his artistry all looked like stars. He is famous for his editorial and celebrity work, having done makeup for models and performers like Amber Valletta, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Julia Roberts, Sharon Stone, Cher, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In fact his big break came in the mid-1980s, when he was hired by Vogue magazine to work on a photo shoot of Meg Tilly, which was photographed by Steven Meisel.
With his far reaching vision, Kevyn was always inclusive and known for his gay activism. Sadly, Kevyn’s career and life were cut short when he died in 2002 from complications due to a pituitary brain tumor at age 40. It was a huge loss to the beauty world, yet his eponymous range of elite brushes and color makeup carries on.
Today, his legacy continues with the Kevyn Aucoin Beauty collection, which was launched in 2001. The range is done in his signature brick red laquer packaging that is clean, modern and classic. Products can be purchased online at www.kevynaucoin.com, as well as nationwide at stores including Barneys NY, Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman.
BITB has always been a great fan of Kevyn’s work and makeup products. Some of our favorite items include The Radiant Reflection Foundation ($45), a creamy stick foundation that provides medium coverage. It’s great for hiding imperfections such as dark spots, acne scars and excessive redness. Available in six shades all named after supermodels, the foundation is created with sheer, buildable pigments to guarantee controllable coverage. His cult classic Sensual Skin Enhancer ($45) is the favorite of supermodels for a flawless finish that leaves skin dewy.
Completely appropriate, another of our favorites is The Making Faces Collection Vol. 1 ($45). It’s an eye, cheek and lip product palette accompanied by an application guide for creating professional quality looks. It features eight pans of color as well as brushes for blush, lips and eyes, plus a mirror, which is very handy for traveling.
Keen on sourcing the best of the best, Kevyn added several pens into his collection. Check out The Prime Color Crème Eye Shadow ($27), available in 4 shades. Formulated to add shimmer, color and drama to the lids, it is packaged in a pen-like tube with an attached doe foot applicator. It glides on easily and dries with creasing. Aucoin also does the Liquid Patent Lip ($27) that gives lips a lasting shine. Don’t forget to check out his Precision Brow Pencil and Flesh Tone Lip Pencil ($24 each) that come in the perfect natural looking shades to suit every complexion.
