THE BEST OF BEAUTY AND MORE FROM NYC…THE DESK OF DORENE
Trimmed and shorn…just returned from a visit to my favorite NYC salon, Bumble and Bumble downtown. In anticipation of the plethora of hot, humid days to come, I asked my main-man Dante for a light-as-a-feather ‘do following a color touchup by the delightful Mai. But this summer promises to hold far fewer bad hair day surprises thanks to The Weather Channel (TWC). In collaboration with John Frieda and Jergens Skincare, TWC now offers The Daily Beauty Forecast complete with skin and hair alerts, product advice and a style checklist of must haves for the day, i.e. umbrella, lip balm, sunscreen. Visit www.weather.com/beauty for the latest frizz forecast.
And to keep your locks in optimum health, Frédéric Fekkai has updated his product ranges with new technologies, texture and scents. The Salon Technician Color Care line for weakened, color-treated hair now incorporates glanaga root extract for enhanced protection and conditioning. The Brilliant Glossing range brings olive oil to your locks via new micro encapsulation; and the Full Blown Volume collection boosts limp strands with weightless polymers.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a cause I wholly embrace, being the progeny of a family of pale faces with an extensive history of skin cancer (thankfully no melanomas). But breast cancer also haunts my family, so I applaud this news from actor Patrick Dempsey. During a visit to Brazil to launch his new fragrance collaboration with Avon, Patrick Dempsey 2, the Grey’s Anatomy star joined executives and physicians to announce Avon’s donation of a digital Mammography Unit to the Gynecology Department of the Federal University of São Paulo.
When Avon launched Unscripted, the first Patrick Dempsey fragrance (a wonderful green woody scent), two years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick. I learned that fighting any sort of cancer is a personal commitment for him. Inspired by his own mother’s successful struggle against ovarian cancer, Patrick established the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in the Central Maine Medical Center in early 2008. That interview is still a highlight of my career.
