Trimmed and shorn…just returned from a visit to my favorite NYC salon, Bumble and Bumble downtown. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a cause I wholly embrace, being the progeny of a family of pale faces with an extensive history of skin cancer (thankfully no melanomas). But breast cancer also haunts my family, so I applaud this news from actor Patrick Dempsey. During a visit to Brazil to launch his new fragrance collaboration with Avon, Patrick Dempsey 2, the Grey’s Anatomy star joined executives and physicians to announce Avon’s donation of a digital Mammography Unit to the Gynecology Department of the Federal University of São Paulo.
When Avon launched Unscripted, the first Patrick Dempsey fragrance (a wonderful green woody scent), two years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick. I learned that fighting any sort of cancer is a personal commitment for him. Inspired by his own mother’s successful struggle against ovarian cancer, Patrick established the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in the Central Maine Medical Center in early 2008. That interview is still a highlight of my career.
