HipDot Cosmetics delivers vibrant, high-performance beauty products and believes in celebrating individuality and creativity through beauty. Samantha Lim and her team are always thinking up ways to feel good, look cool, and have fun. Working hard to develop cruelty-free, hyper-pigmented formulas in thoughtful, functional packaging, HipDot’s launch collection is vegan, and free of talc, mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
Samantha knows that great makeup isn’t expensive to make, so it shouldn’t be expensive to buy. HipDot’s global partners and direct to consumer sales allow delivery of prestige quality products at affordable prices.
BITB spoke with Samantha about the start-up of her company, new launches and the beauty products she can’t live without.
What are you most proud of when you think about your company? What were some of your biggest learning curves or things that surprised you along the way?
I’m most proud of us being able to master high-impact color and shimmer while leaving out ingredients that are harmful for us. Our chemists and lab techs have worked really hard to keep our formulas cruelty free, vegan, talc free, paraben free, phthalate free and mineral oil free — keeping harmful ingredients out of our formulas while not sacrificing quality was very important to us. For so long, you had to choose between products with excellent performance and questionable ingredients, or totally clean formulas that didn’t deliver, but that’s just not the case anymore.
The biggest learning curve has been getting used to how much time it takes to produce physical goods. It’s easy to think of a change or edit a concept in your mind, but understanding the trickle-down effect one seemingly small design change may have—such as redesigning specs, remolding a plate, recurring a board and rebuilding 1000 units—that all takes time and couldn’t happen if one detail goes awry.
What is your best seller? Any new product launches coming up?
Our best seller is our Cenote Eyeshadow Palette. It was the first palette I put to paper. Last summer, I was standing in the middle of a cenote (a sacred swimming hole in the jungles of Mexico) in Tulum and thought, “Wow, this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.” I took photos wishing I could just bottle up what my eyes were seeing and escape to it whenever I wanted. I knew it would make the most beautiful eyeshadow palette, and that’s the moment I decided I could design this collection.
We have a quite few new launches coming up! We’re currently planning on dropping a new eye palette every month, all inspired by different places around the world. We’ve also got a few very special influencer palettes dropping, the first coming up to celebrate Pride Month, which will be available in May.
What products are in your cosmetic bag and on your bathroom vanity?
My daily go tos are Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleansing Lotion, Jojoba oil for my face and Cetaphil SPF Lotion – sun protection is key! I also love using Castor Oil for my brows and lashes and Egyptian Magic Balm for any rough patches.
When it comes to makeup, I love the Hourglass Foundation Stick to smooth everything out and create a nice base for my look. I use the HipDot Perfect Face Palette (blush, highlight & contour) every day. For other makeup, my go to has been our Cenote palette, but lately I’ve been switching it up as we’re testing all kinds of new formulas and shades for upcoming palettes, lipsticks, liquid eye liners & more! It’s easy to be a brand loyalist when you’re developing the products and have to test all the formulas!!
