BITB spoke with Samantha about the start-up of her company, new launches and the beauty products she can’t live without.
What are you most proud of when you think about your company?Â What were some of your biggest learning curves or things that surprised you along the way?
Iâ€™m most proud of us being able to master high-impact color and shimmer while leaving out ingredients that are harmful for us. Our chemists and lab techs have worked really hard to keep our formulas cruelty free, vegan, talc free, paraben free, phthalate free and mineral oil free â€” keeping harmful ingredients out of our formulas while not sacrificing quality was very important to us. For so long, you had to choose between products with excellent performance and questionable ingredients, or totally clean formulas that didnâ€™t deliver, but thatâ€™s just not the case anymore.
The biggest learning curve has been getting used to how much time it takes to produce physical goods. Itâ€™s easy to think of a change or edit a concept in your mind, but understanding the trickle-down effect one seemingly small design change may haveâ€”such as redesigning specs, remolding a plate, recurring a board and rebuilding 1000 unitsâ€”that all takes time and couldnâ€™t happen if one detail goes awry.
What is your best seller? Any new product launches coming up?
Our best seller is ourÂ Cenote Eyeshadow Palette. It was the first palette I put to paper. Last summer, I was standing in the middle of a cenote (a sacred swimming hole in the jungles of Mexico) in Tulum and thought, â€œWow, this is the most beautiful place Iâ€™ve ever seen.” I took photos wishing I could just bottle up what my eyes were seeing and escape to it whenever I wanted. I knew it would make the most beautiful eyeshadow palette, and thatâ€™s the moment I decided I could design this collection.
We have a quite few new launches coming up! Weâ€™re currently planning on dropping a new eye palette every month, all inspired by different places around the world. Weâ€™ve also got a few very special influencer palettes dropping, the first coming up to celebrate Pride Month, which will be available in May.
What products are in your cosmetic bag and on your bathroom vanity?Â
My daily go tos areÂ Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleansing Lotion, Jojoba oil for my face and Cetaphil SPF LotionÂ â€“ sun protection is key! I also love using Castor Oil for my brows and lashes and Egyptian Magic Balm for any rough patches.
When it comes to makeup, I love the Hourglass Foundation Stick to smooth everything out and create a nice base for my look. I use theÂ HipDot Perfect Face PaletteÂ (blush, highlight & contour) every day. For other makeup, my go to has been our Cenote palette, but lately Iâ€™ve been switching it up as weâ€™re testing all kinds of new formulas and shades for upcoming palettes, lipsticks, liquid eye liners & more! Itâ€™s easy to be a brand loyalist when youâ€™re developing the products and have to test all the formulas!!
