Pilar Quintero has always lived a life that balances diversity with a strong sense of heritage and the power of the feminine. She was born and raised in Mexico City to an American mother and a Mexican father and is one of five daughters. Having a family with so many strong women surrounding her gave her a special perspective into what women want and need in their everyday lives.
She attended Mexico’s all women School of Hospitality (ESDAI) at the Universidad Panamericana where she obtained her degree in Administration and Hospitality. In 1991, Pilar married Ricardo and had four children (now ages 10 to 25). After the birth of her second child, Pilar ran a successful small business that specialized in custom-designed hand-crafted cakes and cookies.
In 2002, the Quinteros left Mexico and moved to Seoul, South Korea, following Ricardo’s promotion to General Manager of Estée Lauder Companies’ Korean affiliate. During this time, Pilar was exposed to the highly developed Korean skincare market, and its diverse array of products and ingredients. In 2005, the family moved to New York. Throughout this journey, Pilar encountered a wide array of skincare products and regimens, which she experienced firsthand during different stages in her life, pregnancies, seasonal changes, and travels. And after many years of focusing on family and community volunteering, she joined her husband in the launch of Digital Brands, LLC, so she could share these experiences with other women.
BITB spoke with Pilar about Care Skincare and why the brand stands apart from the rest.
What are some of the challenges and greatest achievements you’ve experienced on your journey of developing Care Skincare?
One of the greatest challenges was identifying the most essential needs for healthy skin, the most important skin concerns, and how we could address this with minimal effort and complexity. And in doing so, making sure we were using safe ingredients was also important.
We are proud of the Care Skincare lineup because I feel we have achieved our goal. I get genuinely excited to hear feedback from women who have tried our products and have seen the results and love the simplicity of the routine.
How does Care Skincare stand out from other brands on the market?
We have a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to taking care of your skin. We believe in products that combine proven ingredients that can deliver great results with multiple benefits, while making sure they are perfectly safe to use.
Care Skincare products have a minimalist approach—starting with our packaging, which is only in English. In all of our messaging, we have removed all of the clutter and simplified the messaging so that we can educate with clarity. We have a full-transparency approach. We disclose a full list of ingredients on our website for all of our products. Finally, by having a direct-to-consumer approach, we make sure to put more of what you pay for into the product formulas that go on your skin, and less into retailer margins and costs.
Our line is straightforward. We offer five products and will be adding two more to complete the routine. When designing the line, we knew we had to have a sunscreen. Great, healthy skin doesn’t happen without protecting it from environmental aggressors, UVA and UVB rays. We currently are testing our sunscreen, which we are planning to launch in early summer. At the same time, we are developing our second serum that will address one of the top concern’s women have today.
As a skin care expert, you probably take great care of your skin. What’s in your cosmetic bag and on your bathroom vanity?
Well, I really don’t want to be labeled as a “skin care expert.” I just know what works best and have surrounded myself with professional experts. Right now, I exclusively use Care Skincare. With my busy schedule, the Care Skincare essentials truly cover all of my needs. I occasionally exfoliate with Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub. Sunscreen is non-negotiable in my skincare routine. While we have been testing our Care Skincare sunscreen, I’ve been using MDSolar Sciences Mineral Tinted Creme SPF 30.
When I have time to apply makeup, I use Tatcha’s Pearl Tinted Eye Illuminating Treatment, Clinique’s Even Better foundation and Mascara (I tend to get an allergic reaction with other mascaras), bareMinerals finishing powder, NARS blush or bareMinerals Gen Nude powder blush. The finishing touch, Bobbi Brown’s Highlighting Powder and High Shimmer Lip Gloss.
