Tell us a little bit about your individual background and how you came to cosmetic dentistry.
I graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 2001, followed by a general practice residency at Peninsula Hospital. After years of working as an associate dentist in various practices focusing on all aspects of comprehensive dentistry, I realized my true passion in cosmetic dentistry and joined the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry with Dr. Jeffrey Golub-Evans. This practice specializes in creating beautiful smiles and has been New York’s premier cosmetic and restorative dental center for more than 30 years.
My focus is to create healthy, attractive, and memorable smiles using the most up-to-date and innovative technology, producing high quality results in a compassionate, caring, and gentle atmosphere attentive to my patients’ expectations and needs. It is very rewarding to create enhancements that are either dramatic or subtle, which immediately transform one’s appearance to raise self-esteem and confidence. My esthetic work can be seen on many celebrity smiles as well as every day homemakers and business people.
What are some of the most harmful things people do to their teeth?
People often use teeth as tools, such as chewing a pencil, or using teeth to open containers that can lead to chips, cracks and even tooth loss. Outside pressure can cause your teeth to chip, and when the force is great enough, they may break or split. Only use teeth for chewing food. Smoking is also extremely harmful to teeth and the entire mouth. Proper home maintenance is key to ensuring good oral health that can sustain everyday stresses applied on teeth and the supporting bone.
Tell us about the Diamond Dust Polishing Paste treatment that you offer with your teeth whitening treatments.
NYCCD’s specially formulated “whitening cocktail” contains diamond dust to pre-cleanse and bleach teeth up to 3 shades before even going under the Zoom lamp. It gives the whitening processes a jumpstart by gently exfoliating teeth to remove surface stains before whitening. We’ve found it to be very effective, and our patients love it!
How long do porcelain veneers realistically last?
Porcelain veneers are the most durable and esthetic option, but typically recommended to replace if and when potential signs of wear and maturity begin to show. These may include darkening at the margins resulting from gum loss, spaces in between teeth, chips, and cracks. This process can take 20 years, slowly progressing, at which point a simple replacement would refresh the look and condition of the smile.
What type of client would you recommend have a bonding treatment? What type of maintenance does the procedure require over time?
Composite bondings have been around for a long time to conservatively alter the shape, position and color of teeth non-invasively. It’s been known as a natural approach in smile design. Bonding can reverse the signs of an aging smile in many ways, such as minor lengthening, filling in a chip, or a slight bulking of teeth to fill in a smile by creating the appearance of a fuller mouth. All of these fixes help to impart a more youthful look.
Bonding is like modern day makeup, it can be added to or subtracted from, and it works with your existing features to complement your individual look, not completely change it, and it can be designed to fit one’s personal style and esthetic. Bondings typically last 10 years and require basic routine maintenance.
How do you think the field of cosmetic dentistry is changing?
With advances in technology, we are able to create results that are more esthetic and stronger to last longer. Studies show that a smile is the most important feature noticed in first impressions, lending significance to means of enhancing its allure. Today’s trend is to be as natural and conservative as possible and so dental materials and methods continue to improve to maintain esthetic goals.
