MEET DR. OSCAR HEVIA: CORAL GABLES DERMATOLOGIST
Dr. Oscar Hevia, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist practicing in Coral Gables, Florida, knows the importance of at-home skincare as well in-office procedures to keep skin looking youthful and radiant. After his patients expressed disappointment with their skincare options, he founded The Hevia Center for Research, dedicated to researching, discovering, and developing new applications, products, and treatments in the field of cosmetic dermatology and aging. As a result, he created HEVIA MD SKIN SCIENCEâ„¢, an eight-product line that features Red Mangrove extract, which has more antioxidant potency than vitamin C.

Tell us a bit about your background. How did you come to choose dermatology as your specialty?
Early during my career as a medical student, I became involved in dermatology research and found the specialty to be very intriguing and academically challenging. I then became fascinated with the facial structure—especially as it is impacted by the aging process—which led me to then pursue a career, focusing exclusively on cosmetic dermatology.
What sort of procedures are most in-demand at your practice?
My practice is dedicated exclusively to non-surgical cosmetic procedures, therefore cosmetic injections of the face, such as “fillers†and Botox®, are most in-demand.
Why is it important for a dermatologist to use a variety of injectables? Can you use a wrinkle relaxer such as Botox® at the same time as a filler like Restylane®?
To get the best results, you need to correct a variety of aging signs. Sometimes this requires a variety of fillers. For example, you would use Dysport® to smooth wrinkles by relaxing muscles of expression. Additionally, filling Radiesse® under the cheeks will prevent the face from sagging. Finally, Restylane® under the eyes will result in a fresher look. Varying the injectables addresses a greater range of aging signs.
We hear more and more about unlicensed practitioners administering cosmetic injections. What is the danger of this?
There are two issues with unlicensed practitioners administering cosmetic injections. These two problems include: (1) the use of injectable materials that are not safe (not FDA approved), which may cause reactions and (2) improper injection techniques, which could lead to disfigurement or scarring.
Are there any promising new cosmetic treatments or devices coming down the pipeline?
In the near future, I’m hopeful that we will have some new injection techniques to help plump the collagen layer of the skin, resulting in tighter, smoother texture.
What inspired you to create HEVIA MD SKIN SCIENCEâ„¢? Tell us about the patent-pending Red Mangrove Extract.
My patients often expressed disappointment with their skincare options, and I realized it was time to get back to research and develop an anti-aging product line that could make a difference. I founded The Hevia Center for Research, dedicated to researching, discovering and developing new applications, products, and treatments in the field of cosmetic dermatology and aging. It was through this research that I discovered the Red Mangrove tree and learned of its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that aid in soothing and healing the skin. It was through further clinical research that I was also able to assess that the Red Mangrove promotes and protects cellular health, in a similar manner that the Mangrove plant protects itself from harsh elements. Further, through a unique and proprietary process, I developed the purest Red Mangrove extract possible, with no commercial processing, as the key ingredient in my product line. Through scientific testing, this extract exhibits greater antioxidant potency than vitamin C, and cannot be found in any other skincare line on the market.
