MEET DANIEL CLARY: MYBODY SKINCARE GURU

08-16-15 | Posted by

Ask Daniel Clary, Director of Education at MYBODY Advanced Probiotic Skincare, which product he loves most and he almost can’t decide. He is that enamored with the MYBODY line and philosophy on skin health.

An aesthetician, Clary has worked at some of the country’s top spas, skin care companies, labs and medical facilities, where he helped to develop products, design protocols, and train others. All of this experience came together when he began working at MYBODY in Phoenix, AZ, several years ago.

Clary chatted with Beauty in the Bag about MYBODY, their philosophy on healthy skin and also shared some of his own beauty secrets. His enthusiasm is infectious.

Here’s what he had to say:

1. What are probiotics and why are they important for skin care?

Probiotics are defined as living microorganisms that provide a positive health benefit to the host in which they reside. Research has proven that our bodies are flooded with bacteria; in fact, they outnumber human cells 10 to one. Meaning we are more bacteria than human! This collective residence of bacteria is called our microbiome. It is part of our innate immune system, designed to defend our bodies from disease, produce key nutrients, regulate digestion, etc. The skin, being the largest organ of the body, has its own immune system as well. Empirical data show that if we can do one thing to our skin to induce an anti-aging effect, it would be to strengthen the skin’s immune system. Similar to ingested supplements, topically applied probiotic molecules will do this as well! In addition, they stimulate a reparative and proliferative response to skin cells (meaning they stimulate protein synthesis..that’s collagen and elastin!), all while being powerfully anti-inflammatory. Incredible technology that dramatically increases dermal health.

2. What are your favorite must-use daily skin care products?

I have a few personal favorite products that I use daily and am obsessed with! First is our Clean Routine Probiotic Revitalizing Cleanser. Clean skin is the foundation of any successful skin care regimen, and this is one of the best formulations I have ever seen. It soothes, hydrates and conditions the skin without stripping like traditional foaming cleansers. A must-have! Next would be our Calm After The Storm Soothing + De-Puffing Eye Cream. I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IT! This cream targets all visible signs of aging in the eye area, rapidly reduces puffiness, dark circles, decreases irritation…and best of all infuses the skin with vital Omega-6 fatty acids. It’s a cult favorite, perfect for the most delicate skin on the body. Finally, my new favorite must-have item would be our new product launch, Glowbiotics Probiotic Instant Resurfacing Pads. These are like BOOTCAMP for your skin, literally. But instead of them “beating” you down, they build you up. These pads boost your skin’s desquamation (peeling) process, brighten and strengthen skin with powerful antioxidants, probiotics and a rare Australian plum extract with the highest concentration of Vitamin C on the planet, for that ultimate glow! These are addicting!!

3. What is the single worst thing we do to our skin, and how can we correct it?

While the majority of experts will agree that overexposure to the sun is the worst thing one can do to their skin, I believe one other mechanism ages the skin faster. Inflammation. Inflammation is our body’s response to trauma or injury. Without it, we would not heal properly. In small doses, we can recover from this. But keeping our body, or our skin, in a perpetual state of inflammation not only ages cells faster, it makes them more susceptible to disease. Unfortunately, it’s this model of inflammation, that our industry has relied on for 40+ years. What causes inflammation in the skin? Chronic forced exfoliation, high Alpha hydroxyl acids usage, toxic ingredients that destroy skin barrier function and integrity. Consumers have been mislead and tricked into thinking the temporary cosmetic benefit of the inflammatory products (inflammation causes the skin to swell, “reducing” lines and wrinkles), is sustainable. This mindset is antiquated and archaic. For the long-term health of the skin, we must strengthen and rebuild it, not break it down or increase inflammation.

4. What do you recommend to treat or smooth cellulite?

Cellulite is a multifactorial condition, with the chief manifestation of subcutaneous fat or adipose tissue bulging out through the skin’s connective tissue and causing a rippling effect. Unsightly, but quite common! From a professional perspective, barring any underlying hormonal or genetic cause, I find the best approach to targeting cellulite is to attack from multiple angles. First, diet and exercise. This is the foundation of any successful shift in your physiological body composition. Topically, combining clinically proven body-contouring procedures with products that contain therapeutic actives to mobilize and reduce adipocyte formation will yield excellent results. Our Fitting Room Firm & Tone Body Serum has powerful retinoids, lipolysis actives, peptides and vasodilators to treat many pathophysiological pathways that lead to cellulite formation. We have had an incredible response with patients using this product, alone and in combination with body contouring procedures.

5. How does stress affect the skin, and what can be done about it?

We live in a fast-paced world! Environmental, physical, lifestyle and emotional stimulus can bring on a marked increase in stress to the body. We know very well that stress can destroy and break down the body at an exponential rate. Not just internally, your skin is directly affected as well. How does stress affect the skin? Stress will rapidly decrease the body’s immune system and elicit a low level chronic inflammatory state. This has an impact on all organs of the body. As I mentioned above, decreased immunity and increased inflammation will age a cell and make it more prone to pathological genetic expression (increase in disease). The remedy? Relax. Take a walk. Do some Yoga. Take a vacation. Ultimately, slowing down the hustle and bustle of life and focusing on your health and wellness will reduce stress, and ultimately reduce the damage stress can cause to your skin.

6. Tell us about your role at MYBODY? What does a typical day look like?

There is no typical day in the life of the MYBODY Director of Education! I am truly blessed to have found my vocation and have fallen madly in love with it. I have been in the beauty and wellness industry, as a licensed esthetician, for more than 15 years. I spend about 25% of my time in our corporate office in Phoenix, AZ, working closely with our sales, marketing and development teams to strengthen brand awareness, find new ways to expand our education platform, and research the best ingredients to formulate exciting new products to launch. The other 75% of the time I am on a plane, canvassing the country, evangelizing the science of our brand to our accounts, patients, the media, and the body of consumers who have fallen in love with our innovative approach to skin care.
