MEET DAMIEN CARNEY: CELEBRITY HAIRSTYLIST and SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL NORTH AMERICAN CREATIVE DIRECTOR
When you think of hairstyling as an art form, you think of Damien Carney, celebrity hairstylist and North American Creative Director of Schwarzkopf Professional. Carney’s impressive body of work with the who’s who of fashion and beauty has made him one of the top names in the industry. With over 20 years experience, Carey’s work has graced the pages of international publications such as ELLE, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, W, Cosmopolitan and GQ.
BITB spoke with Damien about the best parts of his job, upcoming hairstyle trends and the thrill of the unknown that compels his amazing work.
1. As North American Creative Director of Schwarzkopf Professional, what is the best part of your job?Â
The wonderful creative energy that is addictive at Schwarzkopf Professional. Schwarzkopf Professional pushes my skills creatively and technically, in the quick changing world of hair. We’re always learning and no matter how experienced we may be, we must never be complacent – we’re always looking at how we can push the boundaries of hair forward. My job has variety and challenges me even day. So, boredom…it’s never allowed to take hold. Only new ventures and experiences – how lucky am I!
2. Your portfolio overflows with your amazing, innovative work. Of all the hairstyles you’ve created, which is your favorite and why?
I don’t have one style or look. I generally like edgy, thought provoking, unique, one-of-a-kind looks that allow me to create shapes and textures that are out of the norm. I like to play and experiment, even if it doesn’t work. I like the unknown. The only limitations with hair are the ones we create. Today’s world is not about putting styles and trends and applying the same looks to everyone. It doesn’t work. There are many, many trends, lengths, colors, etc going on all the time. At the end of the day it’s about making the individual person look and feel uniquely beautiful. Of course there’s a trend direction. But I like that the direction can be applied and utilized on everyone.
3. What are two hairstyle trends you see becoming popular in 2017?
Loose, free, natural finishes that embrace the individual’s natural texture. Working with the hair in a natural way. It’s kind of the “new wash and wear,” with polish. More about textures and freedom. Not overly done. Less long hair that is overly done with heated tools.
