MEET ANNIE TEVELIN: FOUNDER OF SKINOWL

01-29-17 | Posted by

Annie Tevelin, aka, the SkinOwl, is an accomplished entrepreneur and professional makeup artist with experience in all aspects of the beauty industry: fashion, video and print. Annie has the innate ability to bring out the natural beauty of her subject, with a focus on clean, natural products that allow the skin to breathe, glow and age gracefully.

After starting her career shadowing makeup artists on music video sets in Los Angeles, Annie accepted a position with Lancome Paris to be a member of their Pro-Artistry team. Trained professionally by Lancome Paris motivated Annie to take her education one step further. Annie completed UCLA’s Cosmetic Chemistry program in 2011 and launched what is now SkinOwl Consulting, the first company of its kind.

BITB spoke with Annie about SkinOwl and what beauty trends she predicts will be hot in 2017.

1. Tell us a little bit about SkinOwl. Who/what inspired you to become a skincare guru and makeup artist?

SkinOwl began as an answer to my own skin issues. As a result of my own cystic acne and the trail of insecurity and emotional baggage that it left behind, I decided to take matters into my own hands. While working full time as a makeup artist and sales director for a handbag line, I decided to go through UCLA’s Cosmetic Chemistry Certificate program. It was there that I learned about ingredients and what can actually work to help our skin versus what is marketed to us. I’ve always loved the ability to brighten someone’s day just from doing their makeup. When I learned I could help people with their skin, including myself, with the education I had acquired, I wanted to share it with the world. I was inspired and took to Facebook, where I created a private group called SkinOwl. This was a forum that started as 6 friends and grew to hold 1600 people, all of whom wanted daily beauty advice and makeup/skincare tips. Looking back, this was the focus group that showed me there was a void in the industry for women who wanted sage, sound, honest advice about their skin concerns. Within a year, I closed the group, created a Facebook fan page (which now boasts up to 50K followers), and asked my best friend to make me a logo. From there, SkinOwl, the skincare line emerged.

2. What does your daily beauty routine look like?

In a word, controlled. For years, I wanted to try everything all at once and my skin was a mess as a result of all of the flip-flopping. Now, I use SkinOwl’s Charcoal Beauty Bar as my face cleanser (morning and night), I love Annemarie Borlind’s ZZ Sensitive Strengthening Gel to prep my skin for my Geranium Beauty Drops in the AM or Mangosteen Beauty Drops at night. A few dabs of our Eye+ and two pumps of the Neck, morning and night, and that’s it. I do three minutes of our facial steam, Beauty Steam, once a week, which detoxes, gently removes dead skin, and gives me a few minutes to relax, breathe, and reflect. I can’t imagine not doing it now!

3. What are some of the hottest beauty trends for 2017?

I think the “anti-makeup” movement towards like we’ve seen on Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, and Gwyneth Paltrow is going to be seen a lot more in the mainstream. I also think masks and scrubs are going to have their moment. Supplemental skincare products that cater to specific parts of the face or body are on the rise too! It will be an exciting year for sure with how rapidly the green community is growing.
