MEET ANNA SUI – FASHION AND BEAUTY LEGEND
From her very first runway show, Anna Sui has continued to surprise and inspire us with her unparalleled and ingenious fashion and beauty collections. Her drive and quest for new ideas keeps her at the forefront of style. She spoke with Beauty in the Bag about her business, her fragrances, and what inspires her ideas.
How did you start out in the business?
I was born in Michigan and knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer from a very young age. When I was little, I read an article about two girls that went to Parsons School of Design in New York and opened up a boutique when they graduated. So I thought, “Okay, I have to go to Parsons.” After two years at Parsons, I began styling and also designed for a few sportswear companies. I later launched my own collection in 1981.
As one of the most celebrated fashion designers, why did you launch your own fragrance line?
Although I enjoy doing fashion and beauty, fragrance is the third component to complete a look. I love that fashion and style are a form of self-expression and really allow you to show the world who you are. I always look to beauty and fragrance as the perfect way to complement any look.
Any new fragrance products you’re excited about?
Well, we just launched La Nuit de Bohème, this past spring in the U.S. and it has been rolling out globally. However, my team and I are currently working on a new fragrance that I am very excited about. All of my fragrances are always about embracing a different element of my world — Whimsical, Fantasy, Romantic — and I love to tell stories. I also have some exciting new fragrances and cosmetics launching in the next several months.
What inspires you and what are you most passionate about?
I am truly inspired by everything that happens around me. Whether it is a new place that I visit or even one that I have been to many times, but see in a different way. Or maybe something that I see on my walk to work. I love art and history too. When I’m interested in something, I want to know everything about it. I really enjoy that process and find that it influences so much of what I do and create.
Music has always been one of my biggest passions. When I started designing, my intention was to dress rock stars and people who went to rock concerts, and that’s what I still do. That is why I’ve worked many rock themes into my collections: punk, glam, goth, folk, mod, grunge, and psychedelia.
What is your beauty routine like?
My beauty routine is relatively simple, but I am religious about moisturizing. Skincare shouldn’t be a task; you should want to take care of your skin. I typically use my Anna Sui Protective Primer and a light foundation, a little blush, and eyeliner.
Share something no one knows about you.
Most of my friends know that I like to collect little objects and furniture from my travels around the world, but not many people know that I transform some of these pieces on my own to fit the color scheme of my apartment. Also, I can upholster a sofa.
