Encountering a “masked man” goes far beyond meeting up with a superhero these days. Men across the country are turning to facial masks to boost their skincare regimens, according to online retailer Grooming Lounge.

Picking up where cleansers, moisturizers and scrubs leave off, masks help tame oiliness, tighten pores, infuse moisture and oxygen, and improve circulation. Basically, masks for men fall into three categories – 1) for oily/acne prone skin, 2) for dry, dull skin and 3) newfangled ones for combination skin.

If battling oily skin or acne, men should look for masks that contain a variety of clay, the go-to ingredient for drawing out impurities and cleaning up pores. Anthony Logistics Deep-Pore Cleansing Clay ($23) absorbs excess oils and tightens pores, while giving skin a vitamin boost. MenScience Facial Cleansing Mask ($27) is a deep-penetrating treatment that eliminates oil and fights inflammation with pulverized green tea.

Men with dry skin should look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin and squalene as well as anti-agers like vitamin C and panthenol for firming. Malin + Goetz Detox Face Mask ($40) firms and fights wrinkles while creating a physical barrier to seal in moisture. Alchimie For Men Kantic Mask ($60) calms, hydrates and repairs thirsty skin with a blend of oats, wild pansies, blueberry extract, vitamin E and grape extracts.

Men looking to target the oiliness of the T-zone as well as dryness in other regions should look for masks with both hydrating and drying properties. Eyre BioBotanics Deep Cleansing Mineral Mud Mask ($49) is a multi-zone treatment that uses Australian clay to target the T-zone and a milder mineral mud to tone and hydrate cheeks. Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque ($23) unclogs pores by soaking up dirt and toxins with Amazonian white clay but also includes oatmeal and aloe vera to moisturize and protect sensitive skin.

In order to get the most benefits from a mask, the experts at Grooming Lounge provide the following tips:

Clean Your Face – Always apply a mask after cleansing your face;

Follow Directions – most masks should only be used once or twice a week;

Use Moisturizer – After using a mask, moisturize to restore PH balance;

Be Patient – Relax and enjoy the experience. Most masks require 10-15 minutes of face time;

Get a Facial – Consider giving your skin the ultimate boost by having a professional facial.
