As a child, when it came to ice cream, vanilla was always my flavor of choice. Though chocolate, mint chocolate chip and black cherry might be vying for this number one spot right now, my desire for vanilla everything else hasn’t wavered. In the past, I’ll admit that when I’ve run out of my vanilla essential oil I’ve even massaged a drop or two of vanilla extract on my wrists and behind my ears to freshen up. It turns out this enduring “vanilla love” can be chalked up to science.
You know how delicious vanilla is if you’ve ever had a vanilla soufflé, vanilla milkshake, vanilla latte or anything else with vanilla in it, but numerous scientific studies have shown that vanilla has many other benefits besides its ability to more than satisfy us gastronomically. It has been used as an antidepressant, an antioxidant and to help ease anxiety — the scent alone is a proven stress-reliever and mood-lifter! Vanilla has also been found to ease breathing problems and sleep apnea in preemies and has been used as an aphrodisiac for men for centuries. That’s right, a whiff of vanilla will increase blood flow to the male nether regions and actually turn him on.
Whether you use vanilla beauty products to feel happy, because you love how they smell, to pique his interest or for other reasons of your own, you won’t go wrong with these five finds:
Philosophy Vanilla Birthday Cake Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath ($18) captures the mouthwatering fragrance of a freshly baked vanilla cake. You can lather up with it head-to-toe as a shampoo, body wash and/or bubble bath and enjoy it for hours on end as its light, delicious scent lingers.
Lavanila The Healthy Candle in Pure Vanilla ($22), because you want your home to smell as enticing as you do. This limited edition candle is made from high-grade fragrance oils, 100% natural soybean wax and a lead-free cotton wick for a beautifully scented clean burn.
Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss ($26) comes in a dozen high shine and shimmer finish shades, all scented with a touch of vanilla. This sheer, non-sticky gloss is formulated with avocado, jojoba and chamomile oils, as well as aloe extracts, so lips stay soft, supple, healthy and gorgeous.
Organic to Green Moisturizer Arctic Skin + Lip Coco Shea Vanilla ($12) easily tends to dry, parched skin and lips. This coconut oil and Shea butter blend adds a hint of natural vanilla oil too, for a delectable skin soother that will moisturize and heal wherever you need it, whenever you want. Toss it in your bag and apply it to your lips or use it as a rich hydrator on your face, hands, soles or more.
Sabon Body Butter in Vanilla Coconut ($18) is a thick, rich, body butter that leaves behind a wonderfully warm, sensual vanilla scent. Start with just a bit as you don’t need much to soften extremely dry areas like elbows, knees and heels.
NOTE: Organic to Green and Lavanila products have been sent for review. All others were tested in store. Opinions are my own.
