Meet the Organic Beauty Pro

Kimberly Sayer traces her passion for organic beauty back to her childhood in England. She is the daughter of organic gardeners, who used their home grown vegetables, fruits and plants to create skin and body care products. Translating her childhood traditions into a career, Kimberly trained with UK organic chemist Michael Winter and received a degree from The Neals Yard Beauty Therapy College in London. Fast forward to 2010 and New York, and you’ll find Kimberly building on her career as an organic esthetician with a skin care line that uses only natural ingredients sourced personally from organic farms and fair trade agreements. The Kimberly Sayer of London range of moisturizers, cleansers, toners, serums and masks is available at select Whole Foods, spas and salons worldwide.

How did your interest in organic skin care develop?

My interest in creating organic skin and body care products started early on, as my parents were both organic farmers in England. Growing up in this environment, I developed a great respect for nature and cultivated my understanding of how to grow plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs in pesticide-free soil.  My grandmother used to make organic products from our garden and I saw first-hand the benefits of pure organic ingredients.

Tell us about your studies at The Neals Yard Beauty Therapy College in London.

The highlight of my studies was a focus on organic product formulation and development. I was fortunate enough to work one-on-one with Michael Winter, a renowned organic chemist and formulator in the UK.

What are some key ingredients you like to use and why?

Plant pseudocollagen is one of my favorite organic anti-aging ingredients. Plant pseudocollagen is a glycoprotein, which is a living, plant derived yeast that in nature actually holds plants in their upright position. In skin, it binds moisture on a cellular level, creating a firmer, younger skin. I also love using lavender in my products; it’s such a soothing, hydrating flower. As a restorative treatment, it is perfect for skin in need of healing and repair.

What do you use as an alternative to chemical preservatives?

Willow bark is my favorite organic preservative. It can provide a truly natural preservation system without chemicals that can absorb into the skin and infiltrate the body.

What’s coming up in the way of new launches for the Kimberly Sayer of London collection?

I’ve been working on some new and natural Kimberly Sayer of London products.  While I can’t reveal anything right now, keep an eye out for some great new additions in 2011.

What’s a typical day for you like?  Do you still see clients?

Every day is different for me. I actually don’t see private clients anymore because I’ve grown so much. I like to spend my time building my accounts and creating in-store events that allow me to meet with media and offer advice to the consumer.

What’s in your bag?

Alchemy of Color lip gloss adds the best natural color, and I love Linden Blossom fragrance by Provence Sante. I always keep organic Tahitian monoi oil on hand to keep my lips and hair hydrated and of course, my Kimberly Sayer of London line is at arm’s reach.

What’s your favorite bag?

I love bags from Global Girlfriend at Whole Foods. They’re handmade and fairly traded, which makes me feel good with each and every wear.
