Winter will be here before we know it, and it’s important to be prepared to help prevent your skin from feeling the effects of the drops in both the mercury and humidity. According to Beverly Hills dermatologist and founder of Skin Five, Dr. Ava Shamban, “Dry cold winter air dehydrates the skin leading to chapping and cracking,” but there are steps you can take to protect the skin from the effects of this seasonal change.
Among them, “Rethink your skin routine. Use a gentle cleanser instead of a soap that will over-dry your skin, and apply moisturizer to slightly damp skin at the end of your shower (while still in the shower) to seal in moisture,” she advises. Using a humidifier can help prevent dry skin by adding moisture to the air in rooms you spend a lot of time in, and Dr. Shamban recommends using a moisturizer that is rich in ceramides since these lipids are an important component of the skin. In addition to these professional tips, here are five products that can help keep your skin happy and hydrated until spring rolls around again.
Boscia Cactus Water Hydrating Cream ($38)
Offering the mega-moisturizing benefits of a rich cream in an ultra-lightweight, fast-absorbing gel formula, winter-ravaged skin will drink this up. Featuring Queen of the Night cactus (which is known for its ability to thrive in extreme environmental conditions), a reparative peptide complex and South Africa Resurrection plant extract to improve redness and surface texture while strengthening the skin’s barrier, this is the multitasking hydrator oily and combination skin needs to weather the cold beautifully.
Alastin Restorative Neck Complex ($110)
Sure, a scarf can protect your neck from the cold, but it won’t do anything to help the appearance of existing signs of aging. According to Chicago dermatologist Dr. Carolyn Jacob, “This product was introduced specifically to address the unique challenges of the delicate skin on the neck and décolleté. It contains their patent-pending TriHex Technology to support the skin’s natural ability to produce new, healthy elastin and collagen. It combines peptides and active botanicals to help tighten and firm the skin as well as address redness and discoloration,” she says.
Defenage 2-Minute Reveal Masque ($74)
When you want to sweep away dull, dry cells and give your skin a brightening boost in no time flat, reach for this exfoliating mask. Featuring three types of enzymes and ultra-fine sugar crystals for two modes of gentle exfoliation, it instantly smoothes and refines the skin to reveal radiant, healthy skin you may not have seen since summer. According to Bonnie Marting, ARNP, of Anushka Cosmedical Centre in West Palm Beach, FL, “We offer the 2-Minute Reveal Masque and a luxury exfoliating treatment. If literally wipes away excess surface debris for a smoother canvas to apply treatment products as well a makeup.”
Replenix Pure Hydration Plumping Lip Treatment ($25)
With two forms of hyaluronic acid to infuse the lips with long-lasting hydration, barrier-replenishing ceramides to prevent moisture loss and pout-plumping peptides, you’ll want to keep this treatment on hand until spring has sprung, and well after that. The unique formula also enhances your lips’ natural color and leaves a subtle glossy (but not sticky) sheen behind.
ZO Skin Health Oraser Nourishing Hand Crème ($65)
Ideal for soothing dry, rough winter hands (as well as fading sun-induced spots), this potent hand cream is packed with antioxidants, barrier-strengthening lipids, rejuvenating retinol, anti-irritation ingredients and a slew of skin-smoothing hydrators. With regular use, you’ll see improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration before it’s time to tuck the gloves away.
