IT’S THE YEAR OF THE BODY ACCORDING TO THE NEW ASPS STATS

03-12-19 | Posted by

It’s that time of year again – the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) annual plastic surgery statistics report are out!

According to ASPS President, New York City plastic surgeon Alan Matarasso, “The newly released 2018 statistic from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest organization of board certified plastic surgeons in the world, confirms the safety and popularity of plastic surgery.  It also underscores the benefits of consulting with ASPS members who are qualified to assist patients in determining what treatments may be best for them, whether surgical, non-surgical or a combination approach to satisfy their goals. Our members offer the full range of options.”

For 2018, almost a quarter million more cosmetic procedures were performed over the previous year, and that number has risen steadily over the past five years.  The top 5 surgical procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks. Breast augmentation and liposuction always fall in the top two surgical procedures, despite news about breast implant-associated anapylastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

The top 5 non-surgical procedures were botulinum toxins, injectable fillers, peels, laser hair removal and microdermabasion. This is not surprising, especially since a new botulinum toxin (Jeuveau from Evolus) was just approved by the FDA and novel variations of FDA approved fillers (Restylane for hands from Galderma) continue to be introduced.

“Not surprisingly, we also saw a rise in body-shaping procedures, including breast augmentations, liposuction, buttock augmentations and thigh lifts. In fact, three of the top five ranked surgeries focus on the body. We are seeing a trend towards numerous treatment options available to satisfy the increasing awareness and demands of the part of our patients. For example, there was a spike in non-invasive fat reduction that accounts for the many new technologies on the market that patients are seeking out,” said Dr. Matarasso. These include Emsculpt, Coolsculpting, truSculptiD, Sculpsure, among others.
