I’m not a huge fan of reading glasses. Is anyone? But given the fact that they enabled me to read menus, books, my iPhone and actually earn a living writing on my computer, it was certainly in my best interest to use them. And truth be told, the biggest problem I had with reading glasses is that they actually made me look my age. The anti-aging beauty creams, sun-avoidance and non-invasive steps I’d taken to look years younger were all for naught since as soon as I put on those babies–even the stylish ones–there was no denying which side of 45 I was on.
I’m not saying that there aren’t chic readers out there and I certainly spent more than my fair share of time trying on vast amounts of them, but if I never had to step into the “cool for what it is” Warby Parker store again, I’d be just fine. Which brings me to the purpose of this post…
A few weeks ago, I was asked to review the 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST Brand MULTIFOCAL Contact Lenses and I’m sure by now you understand why I jumped at the chance. Life without reading glasses would help me turn back the clock plus I wouldn’t forever be searching for my readers only to eventually find them propped on my head.
I’ve been a contact lens wearer for distance for over 20 years and ACUVUE® was already my brand of choice, so I was more than game to meet with Dr. Arkady Selenow, NYC-based Optometrist with Manhattan Vision Associates, to get more information on these particular lenses and find out if I was a candidate. Dr. Selenow stressed “the majority of presbyopes are good candidates, but if a patient has high astigmatism, one or both eyes that are not correctable to at least 20/25 visual acuity, or has an eye turn, then these cases would typically not have an acceptable result.” After a thorough eye exam, he told me that he thought they would work well for me but it might take a bit of trial and error since my astigmatism in one eye made me a bit of a trickier case and I wasn’t willing to compromise on much. I needed to be able to see close up for my computer work and for the tons of reading that I do for enjoyment, and I also wanted to be able see crystal clear at a distance so I’d be comfortable driving. Plus, I’d need to see everything in between the two just as I had before my eyes betrayed me and caught up with my age.
Dr. Selenow filled me in on a few basics about the 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST Brand MULTIFOCAL:
- The lenses are extremely comfortable, particularly important because the onset and progression of presbyopia is pretty much the same as the onset and progression of drier eyes.
- These are the first and only ones that address the natural variation of pupil size according to age and vision correction need, crucial to maximize the effectiveness of complex optics.
- They’re daily disposable lenses.
- They allow you to see clearly across near, intermediate and distance vision.
- They’re recommended for patients with little or no astigmatism.
I was very hopeful the first time I tried them. They were very easy to insert, extremely comfortable and I was able to read close up comfortably right off the bat. But, because I had previously worn an astigmatic lens in my left eye that made distance vision perfect for me before, I wanted to be able to see far away a little crisper than what this first try was giving me.  Dr. Selenow was hopeful too. We tried two more rounds of lenses (with one week between visits) and finally got it right – I now wear 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST Brand for ASTIGMATISM in my left eye and 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST MULTIFOCAL in my right eye.
They say that 94% of patients are successfully fit with 2 pair of lenses or less, for me this was also the case with a few follow-up visits to tweak and get my vision just right. The first go-round I was able to read clearly and see fairly well at a distance but I wanted better distance. The second go-round, though distance was great, I felt a slight “pulling” when I had to read something close up. The third time it all came together for me and I couldn’t be happier with the final prescription. I’ve been recommending these lenses to all my contemporaries who whip out their readers every time we dine and I can’t imagine going back.
If you think they might be right for you, I highly recommend you give it a go. You’ve got nothing to lose…except your readers!
