To know photographer Phil Oh’s work is to be impressed by how well he manages to capture the essence of street style beauty. As founder of his famous blog, StreetPeeper, he’s the charming guy on the street with a camera who happens to catch beautiful women passing by. As street style photographer for Vogue, he’s all about capturing cool style and cool beauty looks.

I had the great fortune to be photographed by Oh himself, and I learned quite a bit about capturing the essence of street style beauty in the process. In a nutshell, here are some of the key aspects of street style beauty:

  • Play it cool: street style beauty is effortless and doesn’t look as though it took as long as The Twilight Trilogy to achieve;
  • Play up one aspect of your face: if it’s the eyes, then focus on those; if it’s the lip you’re lusting after, make it noteworthy. If you overdo the makeup, you’ll look more vamp than street style perfect;
  • Your hair does matter, but again, it doesn’t have to be perfect. But many beautiful women on the street— at least in New York—have picture perfect hair. Even on rainy days…
  • Clothing should be stylish but not as though you’re going to the Oscar’s red carpet. Try an “urban glam” look by pairing the everyday (e.g. leggings) with the extraordinary (e.g. fur vest);
  • Wearing crazy heels and carrying one of a kind bags are a definite “do.”

As for our beauty product picks to achieve street style, they’re not unduly expensive, but they’re highly effective. And often, the products multitask and address various issues. Here are some of our favorite new finds:

Street worthy hair is all about being breezy, relaxed yet polished. Since winter is fast upon us, indulge your dry strands with extra moisture and TLC. A good conditioner to use is Aussie Three Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner  ($8.95), which is part of the Moist Collection. It’s formulated with Australian aloe and jojoba oil and is an excellent three minute mask that will leave your hair manageable yet full of shine. Unlike many other highly moisturizing conditioners that weigh the hair down, this one doesn’t.

Foundation should be light and natural—not dramatic as if you’re receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars. A good option is COVERGIRL + Olay ‘s Tone Rehab 2 in 1 Foundation ($14.99), which also gives you anti-aging benefits in one delicious “swirl-y” tube. It’s great for fine lines, discolorations, wrinkles, and has a pretty good array of shades to suit all skin tones. Makeup artist Jake Bailey says that it’s good enough to use on the eyes, and under the eyes as well. Perfect for that effortless vibe you’re aiming for. Since it also has a decent moisturizing component to it, the foundation is ideal for winter.

Playing up either your eyes or lips is just the ticket to getting some well-deserved street style attention. We love COVERGIRL Eye Enhancer Palettes designed by makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath, which contain four shades that blend beautifully and easily. If you want some pure play shades, opt for NARS Cosmetics’ latest Andy Warhol “Self Portrait” Eye Shadow Palettes ($55), which contain a chrome logo on the compact and Warhol quotes on the mirror. A street style must!

Your skin needs attention too, especially in the winter! Use a moisturizing body wash if you are planning to wear shorts or sundresses because no one wants to see rough skin. We love Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash ($3.99), especially for the winter season, and Melvita Rose Shower Cream ($14).

The bottom line? Street style beauty is about finding products and clothes that fit your personality, and that work. It’s not about wearing the ultimate glam gown from Michael Kors or getting a blowout at the most expensive hair salon, but wearing what makes you completely comfortable yet stylish. In the end, it’s about your personality, so let yours shine through!
