ur Skinhibitions.

Help! My Skinhibition is… WRINKLES AND FINE LINES

Wrinkles and lines has been voted the number one skin dislike among women surveyed in the Face Your Skinhibitions survey, sponsored by aesthetic device company Syneron. Lines around the eyes, forehead, and nose, to lip lines will naturally develop over time but how quickly and the severity depends on lifestyle. Younger skin, full of elastin and collagen fibers, springs back into place but as time marches on we gradually lose this elasticity and creases become wrinkles.

What’s the solution?

When it comes to aging, what’s on the inside certainly counts but what goes on the skin counts too. Your skin’s topical 5-a-day should include a combination of sunscreens and antioxidants to protect from external and environmental damage, topical exfoliants such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, and specific wrinkle-fighting ingredients such as retinol to improve the texture of skin and to support collagen production.

Epionce Intense Defense SerumApply it: Intense Epionce Defense Serum (£120, $136) uses the power of five vitamin groups to stimulate skin rejuvenation and help reverse the depth of fine lines and wrinkles.

Book it: The CO2RE system allows precise and targeted treatment of fine lines and wrinkles through a fractional CO2 laser. Only one treatment is needed and results develop over a two-month period.

Help! My Skinhibition is… PIGMENTATION

16% of the women surveyed said pigmentation and uneven skin color was their number one skin-dislike—a response highest among 24-35 year olds. Over exposure to the sun, hormonal imbalance, or scarring may cause hyperpigmentation.

“All skin color is created by melanin, a brown pigment produced by cells called melanocytes, which are found in the top layer of your skin. When melanocytes become damaged, they can produce too much melanin, resulting in problems such as hyperpigmentation,” says Amanda Elias, skin expert and director of Bravura London.

What’s the solution?

Dealing with dark spots or discoloration starts with targeting melanin production and preventing over-active melanin production. Elias recommends combining this with exfoliation, lightening, and moisturising. For the past 50 years, hydroquinone has been the leading topical ingredient for inhibiting melanin production with a concentration of 2% being an effective OTC option. However some critics are concerned with reports of irritation from over-use, leading some countries to restrict its use and others (Europe and Japan) to ban it.

Apply it: If it’s hydroquinone-free option you’re looking for, try elure Advanced Skin Brightening Lotion ($150) and elure Advanced Brightening Night Cream ($150). The active ingredient in this system is derived from a tree fungus that breaks up melanin in the skin in just 28 days. Or check out Bravura Botanical Lightening Serum, (£30), which contains natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Book it: The Vbeam Perfecta, based on Pulsed Dye Laser technology, corrects irregularity in skin tone, fades sun spots and pigmentation as well as being an effective way of reducing face and leg veins and stretch marks if red. Book four to six treatments, four weeks apart.

Help! My Skinhibition is… STRETCH MARKS

Those unsightly red or white lines are a type of grooved scarring caused by rapid over-stretching of the skin, often caused during pregnancy or weight gain. According to the Skinhibitions survey, stretch marks are more of a concern for 16-24 year olds than over 55s. Stretch marks are caused by collagen and elastic breaking down beneath the surface of the skin—literally snapped elastic fibers.

What’s the solution?

Cosmetics investigator Paula Begoun believes “it is impossible for any cosmetic to raise skin indentations back to where the skin level used to be or repair snapped elastin fibers,” however, she points to research studies that show tretinoin (the active ingredient in Retin-A) as having a positive impact on stretch marks, but this ingredient cannot be used during pregnancy.

Apply it: If you’re looking for a natural way to turn back the mar, Orico U Turn Organic Stretch Mark Elixir (£25, $42) is supported by in-vivo (real person) testing where after 28 days women saw a 73% decrease in the area of stretch marks.

Help! My Skinhibition is… LOOSE CRÊPEY SKIN

Our skin has to contend with gravity as we age but its underlying structure also changes over time, which affects its definition, resilience, and tone. 10% of people surveyed said this was a serious concern. There is lower bone density, fewer glands producing oil, and decreased muscle mass, and in case that wasn’t enough, cell renewal will drop by 30% by the late 20s. All of this contributes to looser, saggier, and less elastic skin.

What’s the solution?

They key is prevention by supporting skin’s underlying structures such as collagen—the protein that holds skin up—and hyaluronic acid, which is the natural moisturizing agent that plumps skin out. Supporting these with a protective anti-aging regimen will maintain skin’s firmness and bounce.

Help! My Skinhibition is… ACNE

Inflamed acne causes discomfort and emotional distress to around 650 million women and men of all ages around the world. Hormonal activity, inflammation (via topical products and diet), overproduction of sebum, build up of bacteria and/or allergies, and sensitivities are all issue that affect breakouts.

What’s the solution?

Whatever your age you can keep acne and acne scarring under control. Gentle but thorough cleansing incorporating ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil, niacinamide, and nicotinic acid can help keep bacteria and inflammation at bay.
