The newest FDA approved  fat-busting device, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, is touted to whittle your waist and get rid of muffin tops without anesthesia or surgery.

Zeltiq works by freezing areas of fat, destroying your fat cells and causing them to shrink up and die.  Your body gradually flushes out the liquefied dead fat cells over a period of about four months.  According to Dr. Michael Kaminer,  a Dermatologist in Boston, “Zeltiq is based on Cryolipolysis, which is defined as controlled cooling rather than heating to target and eliminate fat cells. It lowers the temperature to transform your fat cells from liquids to solids. The fat cells are thus destroyed and processed by the liver and then resorbed by the body over the next several months.”

Due to the large size of the panels of the machine, only love handles, muffin tops and tummies are treatable, although smaller panels are expected to be launched in the near future to treat other areas. You need an ample volume of fat for the device to grab onto something – so skinny supermodels need not apply. One treatment can reduce fatty deposits by 20%, best case scenario, and about three treatments are recommended.  The procedure is entirely non-invasive, performed in your doctor’s office, and there is no anesthesia needed. During the treatment, your blobs of fat are drawn into the Coolsculpting panels by vacuum pressure. You may feel a cold or tingling sensation but supposedly, it is not really painful.  For each area to be treated, you will need to sit there for about an hour, so if you are having both love handles, that is a two hour ordeal plus preparation time before and after. You will be seated in a comfy chair for the process and you can bring a laptop, IPod, IPad, Kindle or your technology of choice to amuse yourself while obliterating your fat cells. You can go back to work or your normal routine straight after since there is no recovery time, but you may feel some numbness temporarily. Results happen over time with Zeltiq, and you can see noticeable results within two to four months after treatment, as the body flushes out the destroyed fat.  Getting fat free does not come cheap – you can expect to pay about $1,500 per session per area.
