My love of cinnamon isn’t limited to the Fall and Winter seasons though now is the time that I like to put cinnamon sticks in a pan of water and let them simmer on the stove, infusing the whole house with a wonderful scent. I also like to sprinkle cinnamon into my morning oatmeal, add it to homemade cookies and I’ve even been known to enjoy a whiff or two straight out of the spice jar. There’s just something about cinnamon that I can’t get enough of…and apparently I’m not alone.
“While I love a dash of cinnamon in my chai tea latte, this spice is also a wonderful beauty ingredient,” says Indie Lee, founder of an eponymous all-natural skincare line. “It brings blood to the surface of the skin, for a glowing and supple complexion – and helps to even out fine lines and wrinkles. Cinnamon also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties to rid the skin of breakouts and fight acne.”
Lee cautions agains applying this spice topically by itself, as it can hurt the eyes and cause skin irritation, but thankfully you don’t have to due to the fact that there’s a slew of beauty brands that incorporate cinnamon into their products. Here, five ways to add a little spice to your beauty routine:
Murad Pore Reform Skin Smoothing Polish ($30) features cinnamon and witch hazel to visually tighten pores and balance oil production, micro-polishing beads to clean out clogged pores, pomegranate seed oil for antioxidant protection and increased radiance, and starflower extract to soften your complexion. For best results, massage product over dampened face and neck up to three times per week before rinsing with warm water and patting dry.
Nude Skincare Purify Balancing Moisturizer ($48) helps reveal a clear, calmer and more balanced complexion thanks to cinnamon, ginger, and burnet root to maintain oil production and purify skin, omega 3 to reduce redness, inflammation and irritation and proprietary nutrients to boost production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants.
Lush 93,000 Miles Shower Jelly ($12) multitasks as a body cleanser and shampoo in one. You can work it into a rich lather using a pouf or rub it directly onto your body to cleanse and soothe tired or overworked muscles or feel free to work into a lather to cleanse, soften and add shine to your hair. Cinnamon leaf oil combines with peppermint and eucalyptus to refresh, invigorate.
Bite Beauty Cinnamon Plumping Lip Oil ($22) is infused with cinnamon and resveratrol to hydrate and naturally plump (albeit temporarily) your lips as it adds shine in just one swipe. The way it works is cinnamon bark and pink pepper oils stimulate circulation for a natural plumping effect while peppermint oil provides a subtle warming sensation on lips. Other oils (french olive oil, pure jojoba, castor seed oil, and argan oil) help hydrate for long-lasting moisture.
Demeter Fragrance Cologne Spray in Cinnamon Bark ($20) makes you smell good enough to eat as it surrounds you in is the warm, inviting scent of cinnamon. Nothing more. Nothing less.
