NUTS FOR COCONUTS!
I recently returned from a weekend away in Florida. It was everything I expected it to be and more — the weather was hot and steamy, I visited family and sat poolside under a striped umbrella sipping delicious, icy cocktails. I ate my fair share of freshly caught seafood and deli (hello corned beef on rye with brown mustard and a half-sour pickle on the side!). I took long walks on the beach and experienced the trendy South Beach area as well as the more refined Williams Island and Bal Harbour. Regardless of where I was and what I was doing, everywhere I looked I was surrounded by the most gorgeous coconut palm trees…and to me nothing says Florida more than that!
Which brings me to coconuts. They’re clearly this season’s it-ingredient, not only for their delicious, one-of-a-kind taste in special drinks and recipes but also because they’re chock full of beauty benefits when applied topically. In fact, pure coconut oil can be used head to toe as it rehydrates dry skin and hair — since a little goes a long way less is more here. Just apply a bit where needed, massage in and add more only if necessary.
Loved for its fragrance and its benefits, coconut is a nice addition in a variety of beauty formulations. Here, 4 that stand out from the pack:
Rodial Glamsticks ($28 each) are coconut scented and flavored (yum!) lip butters formulated with Hyaluronic Acid Spheres, Cocoa butter, Vitamin E and SPF 15 so they plump, moisturize, soothe and protect. Available in 10 gorgeous shades.
Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee ($22) is infused with Coconut Water and Argan Oil for a build able, dewy glow that lasts up to 14 hours. Use your fingers or a blush brush to apply this blush and add another layer to build up color, if more is desired. Always blend well for a natural-looking, lit-from-within glow. Choose from 6 gorgeous shades.
Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30 in Tropical Coconut ($36) should be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure and at least every two hours for optimum protection from the sun. The natural coconut scent smells like summer to me and it sprays on easily with a clear, non-aerosol, continuous mist so it’s easy to reach hard-to-get-at areas. It’s formulated with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF30 coverage and also contains cucumber, algae, strawberry extracts and red raspberry seed oil to help nourish, repair, shield and hydrate skin.
Bumble and bumble Creme de Coco Masque ($28) has a wonderful coconut fragrance you’re sure to love. It can be used weekly after shampooing to restore hair health, add shine and rehydrate dry locks. To use, apply generously to freshly cleansed hair and leave on for 7 minutes (or longer if hair is very damaged) before rinsing clean. For extra help, you can also apply the masque and wrap in a warm towel or sit in the sunshine to help it penetrate before rinsing from hair. It contains Kukui Nut Oil to hydrate and soothe dry scalp, Murumuru Seed Butter to restore sheen, improve flexibility and minimize frizz, Shea Butter to soften, smooth and moisturize, Mango Seed Butter for added moisture and Keratin to condition, hydrate and offer additional antioxidant protection.
