DO YOU REALLY NEED TO USE TONER?

05-26-15 | Posted by

You’re diligent about your skincare. You never go to bed with makeup on. You cleanse and moisturize and protect daily and you even use anti-aging serums regularly, but if you’re wondering if you should add toner into your skincare regimen as well, the answer is probably yes.

Celebrity Aesthetician Renee Rouleau is a big believer in toner and says it’s an important step in all skincare routines no matter your skin type. She offers the following reasons why:

  • They remove drying chlorine, minerals and chemicals that are in tap water and can be dehydrating to the skin.
  • They enhance the results of your skincare program. Depending on the ingredients used in the toner, they can help calm skin, control oil, stimulate blood circulation, destroy acne-causing bacteria, provide antioxidant benefits and more.
  • They balance the pH in the skin and support the skin’s protective barrier making it less sensitive and resistant to environmental damage.

Montclair, NJ based, Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie is a fan of toner for those who have combination or oily skin. She likes it for this purpose because, “it can help decrease acne,” she says. Cleanse first, then use your toner followed by anti-aging products, moisturizer and sunblock. Downey recommends, “one coat of toner with gentle pressure and a cotton ball. Do your forehead, nose, chin and finish with your cheeks.”

No matter what your skin type, stick with alcohol-free toners to avoid drying out, irritating or stripping the skin. Look for an alcohol-free formula that addresses your skin’s needs specifically:
