WHY WE LOVE CUSHION COMPACTS
Foundation during the warmer months is a challenge. As the temperatures and humidity rise, who wants goopy pore clogging liquid and creamy options when you can go for something so much lighter. While sheer formulations have been on the market for years, a growing trend is the cushion compact.
Lancôme launched its first miracle cushion compact that makes foundation portable, light and stylish ($47).

Available in 11 tone-to-tone shades from ivory to suede, the cushion compacts take their roots from Korea, where brands like AmorePacific Color Control Cushion Compact Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($60) and Sulwhasoo have been marketing these for years with great success. The Lancôme offering features big cell cushion technology, which features 800,000 pores for the softest cushion feel, and a lightweight, sensorial experience.
The foundation itself is enhanced with brightening actives and, therefore, does more for the skin than simply act as a cover up. Because of a dewy feel, it provides a glowing luminosity for the skin. Ingredients include Symwhite and Adenosine, which help to brighten and exfoliate, ester oil and glycerin hydrate and nourish the skin, which is great if you have dry skin (the formulation is ideal for all skin types). This product also touts a technologically-advanced air-tight compact which maintains formula freshness and prevents the foundation from drying.
It also has a custom pad applicator which provides pressured controlled releases that give the skin just the right amount of formulation wherever it’s applied. Like other cushion compacts, the Lancôme version offers buildable coverage that can be achieved by applying the makeup in broad, sweeping strokes.
Lisa Eldridge, Lancôme‘s makeup artist, has the following tips:
- Start near the nose area and sweep the applicator down and around the cheek;
- Use concealer for extra coverage if you need to;
- Carry the cushion compact during the warmer months in lieu of your regular foundation;
- Fold the cushion in half for harder to reach areas.
Priced at $47, this new compact is a bit less expensive than other variations on the market. Lancôme‘s refills are $39 which is a good value proposition.
