Another year, another sold out blockbuster event! This not-to-be-missed extravaganza is among the most important evenings in the beauty world. It also happens to be a super fun time that includes bubbly, sweets, product samples and ends with a giant goody bag to take home and indulge.
Over 2,200 beauty loving devotees descended upon the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City on March 11th, making this the largest Product Demonstration to date. Attendees had the chance to sample, spritz and spread over 630 products launched during 2014 from all 37 categories, including skin care, makeup, hair care, fragrance, mens, and more. Unlike most other beauty award programs, CEW was the first to launch and only members can vote. CEW members are truly beauty experts; cosmetic chemists, product formulators, marketeers, entrepreneurs, makeup artists, beauty gurus, editors, bloggers, dermatologists, aestheticians, PR pros and more. Literally anyone can win – even new brands who are just starting to make their mark in a very crowded space. And getting a CEW Beauty Award under your belt can catapult any product or brand into the big time.
Under the astute leadership of CEW President Carlotta Jacobson, the organization has continuously expanded the categories represented to reflect the trends in the cosmetics industry. This year, they added the Hair Tools category to showcase all the flat irons, blow dryers, unique brushes, and curling devices that we can’t live without. The uber popular Iconic Beauty Award category will acknowledge two products this year – one in mass and another in the prestige sector). To be considered “Iconic,” the product must have led the way in creating a new category by being the first of its kind, and still be successful today. Among this year’s selection, we noted Exuviance Performance Peel, Aquaphor, Heliocare, Carmex, Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, Dr Macrene Skin Results 37 Actives, Vaseline, Q-Tip, and a host of other favorites. The Indie Beauty Award is another unique category that celebrates innovation. Among the brands highlighted we saw BeautyRx, Kjar Weiss, MD Solar Sciences, NudeStix, VENEffect, Glossier and Foreo.
Another exciting category is the Eco Beauty Award, which was presented by Givaudan, and recognizes a brand that has demonstrated best practices and progress towards the goal of sustainability. Finalists were vetted by The Natural Step, a non-profit global environmental education organization, and these lucky brands will present in front of an Eco Voting Committee who will select the winner.
The 2015 Eco Beauty Award Finalists include these innovative green brands:
• COOLA Suncare
• Intelligent Nutrients
• Marula by John Paul Selects
• Soap & Water
• Surya Brasil
Fragrance also took center stage with a special trends in fragrance display at the event. Fragrance entrants in the Women’s Scent Mass, Women’s Scent Prestige and Men’s Scent categories were showcased and their components highlighted and curated by FIT’s Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing undergraduate program.
The real fun starts when the voting begins, which is the hard part. CEW members vote to select the finalists, and after the finalists are announced on April 3rd, CEW’s Board of Governors along with select industry experts will vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the Beauty Awards Luncheon May 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Winners will be judged based on innovation, delivery system and packaging. Stay tuned…
