NO SWEAT: SECRET FIGHTS STRESS PERSPIRATION

By
Date: 02.07.13

sweat2
One sunny winter morning last week, I was whisked away to a workout where I was encouraged to really sweat it out. And so I climbed trapezes (with help, of course), swung from silk ropes, and had a great workout.

The idea was to get stressed—and to sweat. Not too sexy, if you ask me. But it really was.

The makers of the new Secret Clinical Strength Stress Response anti-perspirant deodorant has released a study that points out the differences between stress sweat, and the plain old fashioned sweating you’ve always known. If you look at it this way, there are three main causes of sweat: physical activity and exercise (you always knew this), environmental heat (think of a muggy day in New York City), and stress.

The last trigger came as a complete surprise to me, but it shouldn’t have. People get beads of perspiration when they are asked to speak in public, and so on and so forth. Have you ever perspired while stressed? I certainly have.

Secret has found out that women can sweat up to 30 times more than normal when stressed, and I found that out the hard way, when I was swinging on silk ropes in a gym. While sweat from movement and heat comes from the eccrine sweat glands (and this sweat is made mostly of  water and a small amount of proteins and lipids), stress sweat comes from both the eccrine, and a different gland, the apocrine, which releases more lipids and proteins. These are magnets for bacteria, and hence, more odor.

Secret-Stress-Response-canisterSecret Clinical Strength Stress Response zaps this issue in the bud: it fights all three causes of sweat, and it doesn’t mask the issue with a heavy fragrance, which actually makes the situation worse. Secret’s BCD technology uses odor-neutralizing molecules to trap odor, lock it away and then replace the odor with a fresh scent to keep you smelling clean and fresh.

Our verdict? We truly smelled great after our workout after sniffing the side we applied the deodorant on (the other was left bare). Stress definitely stinks, but you don’t have to anymore.

The Serene Citrus version is available in stores now.

REGENICA: GROWTH FACTOR POWERED SKINCARE

By
Date: 11.07.12

ReGenica
When it comes to cosmeceuticals and advanced skincare offered by physicians you want to make sure that the products’ efficacy is fully supported by clinical studies. Enter ReGenica by Suneva Medical, Inc., a three product line powered by growth factor proteins, which has three studies to support its benefits.

“Just because something sounds scientific doesn’t mean it is scientific,” said New York dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, M.D., at the recent launch event in New York City that introduced ReGenica to the media and medical community. Sales of cosmeceuticals—a word that is a hybrid of cosmetics and pharmaceutical—grew nearly 30% from 2008 to 2011, reported Dr. Waldorf. And since they are considered beauty products and not drugs, cosmeceuticals are not subject to FDA rigor.

ReGenica, on the other hand, has three clinical studies to support its efficacy—one that proves its anti-aging benefits and two to show its effects when applied after laser rejuvenation treatments.

“Decades of research about growth factors have gone into the development of ReGenica,” said Dr. Gail Naughton, a regenerative medicine scientist, who created the proprietary tissue engineering technology in the line. Dr. Naughton’s experience is unparalleled—she is the inventor of the key ingredient in TNS®, the growth factor blend in SkinMedica products.

The ReGenica line comprises Advanced Rejuvenation Day Repair SPF 15 ($175), Advanced Rejuvenation Overnight Repair ($175), and Facial Rejuvenation Complex Post Procedure ($150). Day Repair and Night Repair fight signs of aging including fine lines, wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, and roughness. Post Procedure is formulated to speed up and enhance recovery after a facial laser treatment.

The products all feature the next generation of growth factor called Multipotent CCM Complex. The complex contains a variety of embryonic-like proteins and growth factors that are characteristic of young, rapidly developing tissue and associated with skin rejuvenation.

The incredible healing capacity of fetuses inspired Dr. Naughton to focus on turning cells back to an embryonic state. “What really intrigued me about wound healing, and still does is that you can do any surgery on a fetus or embryo and it will be born without a scar,” said Dr. Naughton.

The embryonic-like growth factors in the complex are the result of a laboratory process that causes cells to mimic human embryonic conditions.

The three ReGenica studies support the effectiveness of the Multipotent CCM Complex. A controlled anti-aging study, conducted over 10 weeks, asked participants to use ReGenica Day in the morning and Overnight Repair at night. Users saw a 50% increase in moisture and 64% reported more radiant skin after 10 weeks. In addition, 82% had improved skin texture, 90% had a decrease in pore size, and skin elasticity was improved by 23%.

Two post-laser clinical studies proved the impact of ReGenica Facial Rejuvenation Complex Post Procedure in reducing redness and promoting healing. In a split-face study of subjects who had an ablative (deep skin) laser treatment, patients saw improved healing and more rapid re-epithelialization as early as three days after the laser procedure using the Facial Rejuvenation Complex Post Procedure.

Featuring a light-citrus fragrance, the ReGenica products are absorbed quickly and go on smoothly, so you can apply makeup easily after application. The product line is exclusively available through physician offices. For more information, visit www.regenica.com.

20 DAYS TO A BRIGHTER SMILE

PGC_3DWS_PE_01_L-cleaned2Crest has certainly made teeth whitening easy with its line of 3D Whitestrips. Consumers and dentists alike praise the virtues of these little plastic strips as a reasonable-priced alternative to expensive professional whitening. The newest addition to the Whitestrips lineup is called Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips ($49.99) and promises to remove over 10 years of set-in stains in just 20 days.

With seven different options to choose from, picking the right Whitestrips treatment can be a bit confusing. A 1-5 rating system in terms of intensity and whitening power helps. Those with sensitive teeth will do better with choosing an option on the low end of the scale. 3D White Gentle Routine Whitestrips are formulated for people who are sensitive to whitening and offers a concentration that gradually whitens teeth. On the other end of the scale is the 3D White Intensive Professional Effects Whitestrips, which carries a 5 rating, and is said to create professional-level whitening in just 7 days.

The new 3D White Professional Effects is rated a 4 and is formulated to be worn for 30 minutes for 20 days. I’ve been using these strips for the past week and haven’t felt any sensitivity at all. Better yet, I’m already seeing my teeth get whiter. Another BITB writer tried the Intensive Professional Effects and found that this more potent alternative made her teeth tingle and her gums feel sensitive.

Whitestrips have come a long way since the days of flimsy strips that didn’t stay in place. The new Professional Effects features a wider, thicker strip that stays in place easily—you can even drink water while wearing it. Most if not all of the other Whitestips options have these new improved strips as well.

I’ve tried professional whitening at a dentist’s office and found the experience expensive and disappointing. The cost of the treatment ranges from $350 to $550 and requires maintenance with an at-home bleaching kit, which is a lot messier than the simple Whitestrips.

“Many times I will ask patients if they whiten their teeth and they will tell me they use Whitestrips and I am pleasantly surprised because their results look as if they had their teeth professionally whitened,” stated NYC dentist Nancy Rosen.

Most smiles can be brightened, but the strips won’t whiten veneers or crowns. In addition, “people with a grayish hue don’t bleach as well as other hues like yellow or brown,” said Dr. Rosen.

Unfortunately, my own teeth are not naturally pearly white. I see a lot of Whitestrips in my future.

OUT OF THE TRENCHES: ALGENIST TARGETS DEEP WRINKLES

AlgenistTargeted-Deep-Wrinkle-Minimizer
With every new wrinkle eraser comes a set of promises; most give assurances of erasing deep trenches in no time, but Algenist’s new Targeted Deep Wrinkle Minimizer ($45) is very specific when it comes to declarations. It doesn’t use buzzwords like antiaging and eraser: instead, the product is touted as a wrinkle minimizer, specifically targeting deep lines that can really affect your confidence and add years to your appearance.

A new gel to hit the market, Algenist’s latest offering helps prime the skin and smooth the appearance of lines. It is purported to be the only anti-aging product on the market that harnesses the power of alguronic acid, which is a mix of algae extracts with anti-aging benefits. Upon contact with the skin, the alguronic acid filling spheres swell, creating an immediate smoother appearance. This technology is a key reason why the Minimizer acts so well as a primer—you can use it on your forehead, around your mouth, or anywhere you need a little plumping TLC before applying foundation.

Other ingredients include soy protein and echinacea, as well as an active peptide complex. Also notable is that this mixture is free from parabens and sulfates.

The best way to use the Minimizer is after cleansing and moisturizing, making sure that all other products have been absorbed. Apply the gel in the direction of the targeted wrinkle. I used this product twice a day, and noticed a difference in my wrinkles immediately (so yes, the “minimizing” effect in this definitely works), and my wrinkles looked much softer and less obvious in a week. The Algenist line is available at Sephora stores, but also through QVC, which offers auto replenishment every 60 days.

Under promise and over deliver? We think so.
