I was at a soccer game recently when another mom came up and sat down next to me. She’s always been naturally pretty in that “I don’t wear a stitch of makeup” way and today was no exception, except it actually was. She looked better than ever but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was different. Her hair looked the same, her face was makeup free and she was dressed as casually as the rest of us. Then I got it…it was her eyes! She told me she’d recently gotten eyelash extensions and couldn’t be happier with the results–they looked like the lashes she should have been born with! Whether you decide to do the same or make the most of what you’ve got, here are some tips on your road to luxe, lush lashes.
HOW TO HAVE HIGH IMPACT EYES
EYELASH CURLER: Recommended by every makeup artist, an eyelash curler will always make your eyes appear more open and your lashes look much longer. To do it right, only curl clean, mascara-free eyelashes. Open the curler, gently clamp lashes near the roots, and hold for about 10 seconds before releasing. If desired, repeat mid-lash and toward the tips. You’ll like Shiseido Eyelash Curler ($19). Its safe and comfortable edge-free design gets the job done easily without pinching or pulling.
CONDITIONER: Promote lash health with a daily conditioner specifically formulated for the eyes. Try RevitaLash Advanced ($98), a proprietary formula that prevents breakage and improves flexibility, moisture, and shine.
MASCARA: When it comes to choosing a mascara it’s a very personal choice. Some women want their lashes to look completely natural while others go for the fluttery doe-eyed look and, still others say the thicker and longer the better. For an au natural look try Maybelline Great Lash ($6.40), a makeup artist’s favorite that’s reached cult-status. For mega-volume you’ll like CoverGirl LashBlast Volume ($8), formulated with wax particles to keep lashes separated and prevent clumping. When long, noticeable lashes are desired reach for Lancôme Définicils High Definition ($27.50). It lengthens and thickens from root to tip and makes it easy to control build-up.
TINTING: Eyelash tinting is basically dyeing your lashes without thickening or lengthening them. It can last up to 6 weeks, looks completely natural, and needs no maintenance, but if you decide on this method only go to a trained professional in a salon or spa with a lot of experience doing this. Expect to pay between $20 – $40 as prices vary depending on where you get it done.
FALSIES: Eyelash strips can be a girl’s best friend and are easy to apply with a little practice. Experts recommend you align the strip with your eye to determine where you want it to begin and end before trimming it to the correct size. Then cut it in half for easier application. Add lash glue to each strip and let it get a bit tacky before applying. Allow it to dry completely. You can hide any glue with a bit of black liquid liner before sealing it all with gentle swipe of mascara.
EYELASH EXTENSIONS: If you’re looking for instant gratification, long-lasting (up to 8 weeks, depending on the growth cycle of your lashes), thick, long lashes that look perfectly natural eyelash extensions are a great choice. Individual synthetic eyelashes are bonded to your own natural lash to enhance your look. The best part about it? You won’t need to wear mascara or any other eyelash product, and you’ll wake up with lashes as gorgeous as they were all day. A full set of extensions take approximately two hours the first time you get it done and can take as little as 30 minutes for touch-ups. The cost: $150+ (depending on where you get it done) and approximately $50 when you need to get the fillers applied.
