As we move on to 2013 in anticipation of great beauty product launches, let’s take a moment to reflect upon and appreciate the past year. 2012 was filled with innovation, and some real winners in all categories across the board, from skincare and hair care to makeup and body care. Here are some that really stood out.

Estee Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator ($60)

This is the first fast-acting serum from the brand to dramatically reduce the appearance of unneven skintone, and the best part is that it’s formulated for all skin types. Banish red spots, acne scars and dark spots with this marvelous fluid. This skintone illuminator also won the “Best Anti-Aging Product” at the 2012 CEW Awards.

Fresh Elixir Ancienne ($260)

Oils for the face are super sexy, and this one wins hands down for being a luscious blend that really and truly works. It is a precious mixture of pure oils (sea buckthorn, meadowfoam, black currant, jojoba, and wheat germ blend) with age-delaying extracts that is hand blended in a monastery in the Czech Republic. In laboratory tests, Elixir Ancien reduced wrinkles by 56% and reduced the total length of wrinkles by 62%. Plus, it’s a superb moisturizer.

SK-II Skin Signature Eye Cream ($110)

Nothing that this brand ever follows the wrong path, in our opinion, and its latest Skin Signature Eye Cream is no exception. SK-II’s signature peptide pitera complex provides wrinkle resistance while it superbly moisturizes.

AmorePacific Luminous Effect Brightening Serum ($220)

AmorePacific’s new Meladefying Complex, a blend of Asian botanicals, was used to create this serum. The blend includes milk thistle, ginko leaf, orange peel, magnolia and lonicera Japonica, which work to inhibit the development of excessive melanin in the skin. The idea behind this blend is to target existing melasma to create a brighter, more radiant complexion. The botanicals create a fine net that envelop the skin with a protective veil to boost moisture levels and increase the rate of absorption. Talk about a bright idea!

ZO Medical Retamaxâ„¢

ZO Medical is not just another garden variety skincare range. Available exclusively through physician offices, this vitamin A micro-emulsion that effectively reverses signs of aging including lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture, and hyperpigmentation. It contains a potent amount of retinol (1%) that is blended with stem cell antioxidants and ingredients to minimize inflammation. New fresh skin will be revealed in weeks – look out!

Shiseido Makeup Shimmering Cream Eye Color ($25)

Created by Dick Page, these individual pots of color are lightweight and create a dewy finish. Smooth and blendable, the formulation contains a shimmering powder that reflects different colors from every angle, emitting an intense radiance. This cream eye shadow is available in 16 shades from a pale mist to a cool ice blue.

MAC Cosmetics Electric Cool Eye Shadows ($18.50)

Inordinately cool as only MAC can be, the Electric Cool Eye Shadows are some of our favorites because the pigments are soft and shimmery, and extremely long lasting. It’s modernistic in the sense that the shades are pretty “pop art” (think Warhol) and the blending power of these is just stellar. Which means you can layer your smokey eyes till your heart’s content, and mix and match all year long.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge ($24)

A double-ended wand, which gives you a thick red lip on one side and clear gloss on the other, Aqua Rouge truly is the cat’s meow, and was even used by Madonna for her latest tour. The new Aqua Rouge line comes in 12 shades that range from the prettiest purple to the beigest brown. The #8 lip shade was the one worn by the pop icon on stage.

Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Body Butter ($35)

Almost every body butter that Laura Mercier makes—from the Creme Brulee to the Almond Coconut Milk Body Butter—is thick and delicious. It’s so good you practically can put a spoon in it and eat it up. This super rich body butter is packed with shea butter, illipe butter, grape seed oil and jojoba esters—ultimate luxury for your skin.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Sheer Solution ($8.99)

Finally, for those with thin hair who have frizz issues, there’s a serum that doesn’t weigh your locks down but gives you the results you want. This two part styler even works for the frizziest, finest hair and comes as a smoothing lotion and a lightweight serum formula. Frizz-fighting silicones are featured in the serum while the lotion boasts hair nutrients. Shake to combine the two phases before application. Sheer genius!

Living Proof “Restore” Collection ($29)

Because of extensive damage caused by heat styling, curling and coloring, hair often needs a “spa” treatment to recover and get restored. Living Proof’s “Restore” collection is basically an ICU for strands. The 14-day treatment features the Restore formulation with patented molecule OFPMA, which creates an exquisitely thin, weightless shield around each hair strand. There’s a phenomenal moisture management system that ensures that at the end of two weeks, your strands will no longer look brittle and damaged.
