FALL HEAD OVER HEELS FOR AUTUMN’S SCENTS
The advent of a vibrant fall brings crisp scents of cinnamon, hot cocoa, gingerbread, and everything that’s spicy and warm. A fall fragrance wardrobe typically means warm scents, but that doesn’t mean florals go out the window. And this season, hair care and home care welcome some new aroma profiles as well. Here are a few fragrances to get you into the mood:
Estee Lauder Modern Muse ($98)
The new Estee Lauder fragrance is a tribute to all things confident, powerful, individual, and feminine. The novel “dual impression” structure means it connects to women in two contrasting ways: one, through a sparkling Jasmine Accord with exotic mandarin, honeysuckle nectar, and jasmine sambac; and another through the Sleek Woods Accord with a blend of two patchouli essences wrapped in Madagascar vanilla, amber wood, and soft musk. The idea behind the dual accord is that the modern woman will find her muse (woodsy or sparkling floral) to fit her unique personality and style.
The tall luxurious bottle with soft rounded sides, and a bow that reminds me of Ferragamo’s signature icon means the woman that is also perfectly dressed. The 3.4 oz bottle retails for $98.
Bond No. 9 Perfumista Avenue ($280)
In honor of the fragrance house’s 10th anniversary, Bond No.9 created a uniquely feminine fragrance called Perfumista Avenue. The first Bond No. 9 scent that is not named after a New York City landmark, Perfumista Avenue is all about a fantasy street, filled with perfume wearers who represent the creme de la creme of New York. Top notes of davana, nutmeg, safran, red plum; middle notes of rose oil, rose water, peonies, jasmine; and a base of patchouli, musk, modern amber, and mate make this a very special fragrance that’s both daring and voluptuous. Housed in a vivid magenta version of Bond No. 9’s signature star bottle, it retails for $280 for a 50 ml.
Frédéric Malle Perfume Guns for Home
Malle needs no introduction in the fragrance world (he is the grandson of the founder of Christian Dior Parfums, and now he has branched into the wonderful world of home fragrance with his new perfume guns. Three innovative scents, Un Gardénia la Nuit ($185), Chez Monsieur ($145), and Marius & Jeannette ($145), are ideal ways to usher fall into your home. Un Gardénia la Nuit is intensely imbued with gardenia—vegetal, fruity, and milky. Chez Monsieur is a bit more masculine and strong with woody testosterone notes. Marius & Jeannette takes you on a trip around the world, with the fragrance of the invigorating Mediterranean Sea and an evocation of mint and anise. Unlike candles whose scents “pile up” in a room over time, perfume guns enable the fragrance to gently dissipate.
Essence of Beauty Fine Fragrance Collection

Nobody wants a whiff of something so strong that it’s enough to knock your pants off. The surprisingly new fine fragrance collection from CVS/pharmacy ‘s Essence of Beauty presents its scents in various forms, from body mist to shower gel. While fragrance is an intensely personal statement, the art of layering can help you come up with the combination that best suits your personality. For fall, Secret Woods is a personal favorite of mine, with red apple, pomegranate, jasmine petals, and vanilla mask. If you’re a romantic, stick to Forever Paris with cassis, Parisian roses, French vanilla, and amber. If you’re spring-sick, try Wind Kissed, which has white freesia, blackberry, cotton flower, and white amber. In the Tropics is an ode to Bali, and features juicy pomelo, pink grapefruit, agave flower, and sandalwood. The packaging looks and feels super luxe too, but everything is priced at only $2.99-$12.99.

Just when you thought that fragrance meant body care alone, Chaz Dean surprises us with an intensely fall hair care line featuring the warm scent of Fall Apple Spice. A seasonal addition to WEN® Hair & Body Care by Chaz Dean, Fall Apple Spice offers a warm and nourishing scent coupled with the utilitarian and functional aspects of a daily hair care line. Vanilla bean, apple fruit, green tea, goji berry, pomegranate, and maple syrup are used to boost the conditioner’s anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties in addition to creating a strong but warm fragrance, while clove flower extract, cinnamon oil, ginger root oil, orange oil, lemon peel extract, nutmeg and other ingredients are used for scalp health. Consider this an anti-aging hair care line as well (it has peptides, amino acids, soy proteins and vitamin B5). Note that this line does not have a shampoo. It consists of a conditioner ($40), treatment mist ($15), and oil ($20).
