You know that feeling you get when your skin is taut, rough and thirsty?

Dryness makes skin look older and dull or drab. This can be caused by getting too much sun, climbing high altitudes, swimming in a chlorinated pool, or overdoing it with aggressive or acid-based skin care or peels. The answer, according to many dermatologists and skincare experts, is hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, which is a polysaccharide (like an oversized sugar).

According to New York City facial plastic surgeon Sam Rizk, “HA is naturally occurring in connective tissue throughout the body and is found in the highest concentrations in the fluids of the eyes and joints. It is  also found in skin. As we age, our body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down. Skin that is hydrated will appear plumper, firmer and more radiant, whereas dehydrated skin can look dull, sallow, and slack which translates to older.”

It’s no wonder that HAs are popping up in everything from serums to creams, hair care, eye drops and gel masks. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to draw water into the skin to keep it soft and supple and it functions effectively as a barrier protector. But not all HAs used in skincare are the same.

“While the HA molecule is too big to penetrate the skin, micronized HA products have been shown to draw water into the skin and prevent moisture loss. These products form a skin barrier and provide a soft, moisturizing effect that makes skin feel smoother and appear more even-toned,” says Washington DC dermatologist and Founder of Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery Tina Alster.

Check out our list of 6 HA superstars.
