Face mists have come a long way from the Evian Brumisateur, which set the bar years ago. Now, they not only give you a refreshing feeling but they also act as primers, hydrators, refreshers and anti-aging boosters. Here are five we love:

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water ($12.99)

Rich in selenium, and other mineral salts and trace elements, this spray is loaded with antioxidant and softening properties. It’s ideal after a day outdoors but also soothing after aesthetic treatments like a peel. Formulated for sensitive skin (as with all La Roche-Posay products), this is a great summer buy.

Caramance ($12.99)

A brume d’eau face mist (it also comes in a highly refreshing body version), Caramance hydrates, refreshes, and also naturally lightens and tones the skin. It includes effective soothing ingredients to fight the irritation associated with sunburn, redness, pollutants, cold and wind, heating, sand, and chlorine. In three versions (Pure, Chamomile, and Rose), the water also acts as a makeup primer; I keep one in my pocketbook at all times, especially in the summer. The name references the water’s source, the mineral rich Caramance spring located near Upper Languedoc, France.

Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist ($38)

We’ve always loved Jurlique for its calming properties and its approach to natural skincare. This one features the brand’s Comfort Complex including calendula, and it helps restore restore moisture and skin clarity. It has a vegetable garden freshness to it with the aroma of fresh cucumber and chamomile, and as the name states, helps with redness.

Sulwhasoo Hydro-Aid Lifting Mist ($45)

Korean skin care company Sulwhasso uses natural ingredients wherever possible: hence the herbal seaweed mist for intense hydration. An ultra-fine mist, this spray helps fight the signs of stress and fatigue on your skin (those in heavily-populated cities may find this helpful). As with many mists, this promises hydration—and actually delivers it—immediately upon contact with the skin.

Avene Thermal Spring Water ($18)

Packaged on the actual site of the spring in France, this water is pure, preservative free, and non-drying. It softens, calms, and reduces inflammation. Rich in silicate and trace elements, the water has a pH of 7.5, and is preservative free. The ultimate refresher during a steamy summer commute.
