Brand new year, brand new makeup trends…usually. But, there’s one straggler from 2016 that will only intensify this year, and I for one am more than happy it’s here to stay. The molten makeup look is flattering for all because it can be pulled off in a variety of ways. You can play up your eyes with metallic hues, your face with warm or cool highlighters and try a lip look or two.
“Metallics in the form of liners, shadows and even lips will be huge in 2017,” says top professional makeup Artist, Katie Jane Hughes. She’s perfected the look by applying shimmery bronze eyeshadows with a damp brush to intensify the color and pairing it with a red lip for special occasions or a nude lip for a laid-back, chic vibe. Wear this trend exactly as Hughes likes to let it play out, and also experiment with different metallic options to find some new favorite looks that suit you perfectly. Do keep in mind that when it comes to nailing the look you’ll want to choose one area to go for it while keeping the remainder of your makeup low-key.
Ways to Wear It:
- Substitute your usual neutral black or brown eyeliner with a thin swipe of bronze, copper or silver on your upper lid.
- Try some silver shadow at the inner corner of your eyes to make them sparkle.
- Ring your entire eye with a metallic (WC) shade and smudge it out.
- Sweep warm golden highlighter along your cheekbones
- Wear a metallic lip alone for the adult version of metal mouth.
- Layer metallic shimmer on top of your usual lipstick for added dimension or concentrate some sheen in the center of your lip for a pouty lip look.
Pixel Baked Eyeshadow ($5.99) has a multi-dimensional pearlized finish and goes on velvety smooth. Get on board with the metallic trend and use your finger to swipe on Gleaming Copper, Intriguing Gunmetal or Glowing Silver or apply damp with a makeup brush for a more intense pigment payoff. It’s also available in Alluring Green, Mesmerizing Blue, TK Pink and Fascinating Plum.
Yves Saint Laurent Full Metal Shadow ($30), formulated with 40 percent water, has a cooling dry-down effect and a high color payoff. You’ll love this long-wear liquid shadow for its ease of application (the rounded applicator can be strategically maneuvered to apply product to entire lid or as a liner) and the fact that it won’t crease, flake or fade.
Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc ($44) illuminates. Use it to add a subtle gleam wherever you desire. Choose from three color combos. The light-reflecting properties of this lightweight pressed powder flatter with a healthy-looking radiance, wherever it’s applied. Swirl a large fluffy brush in the compact to combine complementary shades and dust it on your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your chin. Use an eyeshadow or liner brush and play up your eyes with one or a combo of any of the four hues. Enhance your shoulders, shins, or wherever you’d like some added sheen.
Milk Makeup Lip Metal ($28) promises a smooth, “foil-like finish” in a hydrating, antioxidant-rich, weightless, liquid formula. Simply click the pen to bring lip color onto the brush applicator and pretty your pout.
