Beautyinthebag.com snagged a few moments of Thom’s time to bring his highly coveted style secrets to you!
How often can we find you at the GARREN New York Salon?
I’m at the salon three days a week, but my schedule is constantly changing! I am always on the go… jetting off to locations for advertising shoots, magazine covers and celebrity sittings.
Do you have a signature style/cut?
I really believe that styles should be tailored to the unique attributes and personality of the individual. What works for one person may not work for another!
Any brilliant DIY styling tips you can share?
No product overload! Don’t fall into the trap of using too much product, it will only weigh your hair down.
To create volume, I suggest using GARREN New York Designing Spray Tonic
lightly on the hair, and then twisting the hair into a knot. Let it fully dry and then let it down — the end result will be beautiful, voluminous waves.
If your hair is thinning, let hair air dry naturally to achieve a natural lift – or use a blow-dryer on a medium to low setting. When blow drying hair, blow dry in the direction your hair grows in naturally. I recommend starting at the root and finishing at the end.
You split your time between private clients, editorial, runway and advertising work – do you have a personal preference?
I love them all! The variety of work means that with each new job, I have a fresh, new perspective.
What are your personal must-have products?
Always, always use a gentle, cleansing shampoo and a good moisturizer with UV protection.
Which products do you suggest for men and women in general?
GARREN New York Designing Spray Tonic ($26.00)
An alcohol-free spray-on hair tonic that delivers a long-lasting, natural-looking lightweight hold, while nourishing and protecting the hair. Use on straight hair to add volume or on curly hair to maintain body and add shine. (www.garrennewyork.com
Rene Furterer Volumea Volumizing Shampoo
Volumea volumizing shampoo procures body and texture in fine hair lacking volume. Soft, perfectly detangled, hair reveals air-light and long-lasting volume.
Rene Furterer Okara Two-Phase Leave in Conditioner
This treatment for colored, highlighted and bleached hair protects 80% of color, while providing softness and radiance.
Kerastase Mousse Nultri-Script
Hair is nurtured and left with long-lasting body and hold. Reinforces hair to help protect against damage caused by brushing and blow-drying.
Men’s ROGAINE® Foam and Women’s ROGAINE® ($29.99 for a one-month supply; $49.99 for a three-monthly supply)
is the only FDA-approved topical treatment to regrow hair. I’m a ROGAINE®
user myself, and always recommend it as the first line of defense for my clients with thinning hair (www.rogaine.com
What was it like getting your start working with Bruce Weber?
My very first job was actually with Glamour,
working on Christie Brinkley. I met Bruce shortly thereafter on a Peroui shoot and found that we made a great work match! I feel so lucky and privileged to have had so many opportunities to work with Bruce, and so many other truly talented photographers.
Any great celeb stories to share? (names, or no names!)
There’s one moment that sticks out, in particular for me. I got a call from someone who said Herb Ritts had told him I was the stylist to go to for a haircut. It was around midnight, so I was in bed half asleep. I asked who was calling – and who was on the line but Richard Gere. Not a bad person to wake you up in the middle of the night!
