Lasers and ultrasound-based skin rejuvenation devices are great and get the job done, but they come with a lot of downtime and some pain, says Marina I. Peredo, MD, a Manhattan-based dermatologist. “They also do nothing for skin laxity,” she says.
That’s why Dr. Peredo is so excited about Cutera’s Secret RF, a microneedling device powered by radiofrequency energy. “It’s my new favorite toy.” Dr. Peredo made her comments at a media breakfast held at Skinfluence, her Park Avenue office.
Microneedling uses tiny needles to create tiny holes in skin, which stimulate your skin’s natural healing process i.e. the production of collagen, the main building block of healthy, youthful skin. Our natural collagen supply dwindles with advancing age.
And the RF makes the needles hot, she says. “We stimulate new collagen with microneedling and tighten the old collagen with the RF energy in one treatment,” she says. “One plus one doesn’t equal two with this device, it equals 10.” (Adding platelet-rich plasma, topically or via injection, will double down on the results by further boosting collagen production, she says.)
This device treats the whole body. “Face, neck, body, hands knees and more,” she says. It can improve scars (even acne scars), fine lines, wrinkles and stretch marks. “One treatment lasts just 20 minutes,” she says.
More than one treatment is usually needed for optimal results, typically 3-6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, she says. Improvements are gradual, but tend to peak at about three months. Results last 12-18 months, but maintenance sessions can prolong your results.
Unlike other energy-based devices, Secret RF works on all skin types. ”RF is color blind,” says Dr. Peredo.
There’s very little downtime (read: close to none). “You are pink for one day. That’s it,” she says. “You may feel some heat or pressure during the procedure,” she adds. Your doctor will apply a local numbing cream to ease any discomfort.
